Though actress Daisy Ridley has received many props for playing a strong female character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seems not everyone was a fan of the casting choice for Rey. Ridley recently voiced her offense after an internet user created a meme on their personal Instagram account using an image of Rey. In a world where we are more used to seeing women body shamed for their curves, Ridley proves that body acceptance goes both ways.
People reports about the meme body shaming Rey and the actress’s response. The image of Rey was captioned with the words, “I can't believe the unrealistic expectations I'm setting for young girls. Who cast me anyway? Don't they know real women have curves?”
After seeing the meme online, Ridley reposted the image to her Instagram and responded by saying, “Real women are all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don't have families. I'm a 'real woman' like every other woman in this world.”
Ridley was quick to delete her response after she realized that she inadvertently put her online critic in the cross hairs of some of her most die hard fans. She later urged fans to cease the witch hunt, writing, “Guys it was not my intention for anyone to send messages to that poor person that posted the original picture. My whole post is about being kind to each other, so please refrain!”
Ridley went on to write a lengthy response about the whole situation, asking that people simply be respectful and kind to one another. She went on to write, “I'm just a normal girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, just like Rey. I will not apologize for how I look, what I say and how I live my life cause what's happening inside is much more important anyway and I am striving to be the best version of myself, even if I stumble along the way.”
