As we get our last minute accessories together to go with Halloween costumes, the FDA wants to make sure people are aware of the dangers of illegal colored contact lenses. You may be surprised to hear these colored contact lenses that add that spook factor to your costume can also do some serious damage to your eyes.

Fox News reports about the FDA warnings about the dangers of these red and white colored lenses that could even lead to blindness. The FDA reminds Halloween enthusiasts that the only safe and legal way to wear contact lenses is to purchase them with a prescription from a licensed eye doctor.

Buying colored lenses from costume shops, online stores and novelty stores that do not require a prescription is illegal and wearing contacts purchased from these places can do serious damage to your eyes. James Dinkins, executive associate director of the Homeland Security Investigations, warns in a statement, “Even though Halloween approaches, consumers shouldn't let a good deal or great costume blind them to the dangers of counterfeit decorative contact lenses.” He adds, “What's truly scary is the damage these counterfeit lenses can do to your eyes for a lifetime.”

Have you ever worn colored contact lenses with your Halloween costume?
