An old American Film Institute interview featuring Dustin Hoffman has resurfaced and is making its viral appearance all around the internet recently. The interview clip features Hoffman getting all teary eyed while questioning the idea of what makes women beautiful and discussing what it was like transforming into a woman for the classic comedy Tootsie.
He explains how he insisted the makeup artist make him look truly like a woman before he would agree to make the film. When Hoffman felt satisfied that he looked like a real woman he then asked that the makeup artists make him beautiful. But when told that was as “good as it gets” he began to question how women are viewed in society.
He tearfully explains a conversation he then had with his wife about how he feels many interesting women are probably overlooked because of how society has been “brainwashed” to believe that outer beauty is all that counts. He also adds that he undoubtedly passed up many interesting women at parties because they were not outwardly appealing. With tears welling in his eyes the seasoned actor says of the movie Tootsie, “That was never a comedy for me.”
