To raise money, some schools are selling advertising on, around or in their buildings. Is this a good idea?

What ads have you seen in public schools?

Yes, it is a great way for cash-strapped schools to raise money (43.8%)

No, public schools should be ad-free (56.2%)

Obviously the school feel like they need to take this step. No I'm not too keen on the advertising but if that's what they need to do to raise money and it's getting the tension they want then I guess it might be worth it.

In our case, my daughter's old elementary school does this. They are getting a lot of money through the advertising and it is also promoting local business in the area. I think it's a win win as long as the advertising is a "clean" business. They are very strict on who they let advertise and the businesses have to be local.

I'm not a fan of ads per se, but if it helps the school out (and less fundraisers put on the parents) and it's an appropriate ad I don't see why not.

I can see why the schools would want to do this; however, I think there's a conflict of interest. If they allow they advertising they are, in effect, endorsing the product being advertised. That would automatically influence the children (not to mention the parents) to lean towards buying these products. Since 1991, Sweden has banned advertising directed toward children under age 12, b/c they feel a child does not have a developed-enough worldview to help them be discerning about this. I doubt this would happen in the US but I think care should exercised to be sure these school advertisements don't unduly influence children.

It would be nice if schools didn't have to advertise but the truth is the truth and they do not have enough funding for things as long as it is not unhealthy advertising I see no reason not to do it.

I think it would depend on the advertisement. There would have to be guidelines of what could be displayed. On the buses is one thing I don't think that INSIDE the school is a good idea.

Under normal circumstances I would say no. However, in these days of budget cuts and cash strapped schools sometimes we have to do a little extra to make money for the school...so I say yes!

it is a shame how schools have had to cut music sports and other activities. If this is a way to reach much needed funds and the items are not controversial, it seems to be an honorable way to raise money. So sad our children are not top priority when it comes to allocating funds
