To all the mothers here and who ever can understand what i am going through with my son. I have a question and would love anyone's opinion. My son is 8 years old and is in 3rd grade, hes very smart. He got tested for dyslexia and i find out hes dyslexic, i wish i knew this earlier.. I knew something was wrong ever since kindergarten when he was learning to read and write from the way he read and wrote, but i always thought he would catch up and get better at time since they were learning at the time. then first grade come and hes still struggling and than second grade same thing i did everything as a mother to help him get better in his reading and writting. He would always complain he doesnt want to go to school and he would get so fustrated when it came to homework and use to say he wasnt smart enough and as a parent it broke my heart. My qs is what can a parent with a child with dyslexia do to help her child,at home i practice reading and writting, is there more i can do?

Well, I can't say I have any experience as a mother, much less as a mother of a dyslexic child. But I do have some advice to offer you from the standpoint of having lived in your son's shoes as a dyslexic. I had major issues trying to learn reading and writing at that age. It some something akin to dumb luck that I ended up in a test study class at the end of first grade and the first half of second grade where they were testing out a different type of teaching method for reading and writing called the Lippincott Basic Reading Program. Because dyslexics see the world in a very different sort of way, traditional learning methods don't really work. This series does. You can pick up used books from the Lippincott Basic Reading series from Amazon for a really great price. I also highly recommend patience. The reading and writing aspect now is one thing, but much bigger challenges are ahead in the 4th grade up in math... Long division is purely evil for dyslexics... o_0
