Blush 101: Baby Steps

Confession: I don't understand, but really want to learn, how to use blush properly. Or which blush to even use. My sis and I grew up with very natural, grassroots parents and makeup didn't really come into my life until I graduated college and entered the professional workforce. I've spent the last 6-odd years secretly studying my coworker's techniques and successfully integrated the full eye-enhancement battalion, all things lip stick/gloss/stain, and intermediate foundation/powder skill into my life. But blush? I am clueless. My face is oval shaped, with slightly pronounced jaw-line and big eyes, but no real cheekbones to speak of. I know blush can help create depth in that department, so if anyone has any tips or products to recommend, I'm ready to hear your wisdom!

Look on the mirror with a big smile and gradually put blush on the apples of your cheeks until your satisfied.

There are two schools of thought when applying blush. Some apply it to the apples of their cheeks, but some makeup artist believe that ages the face because the apples of your cheeks fall why a person isn't smiling. That visually drags the face down. So those makeup artists apply it to the outer two thirds of their cheek bone. I use both according to how I feel. Then their is cream, powder, and liquid blushes. I prefer cream ( I think it looks more natural) but good luck finding them.

First, get yourself a decent blush brush. No matter what brand of makeup you're using, if you don't have the proper tools, it isn't going to look good. Get yourself a blush/bronzer duo, or even a contouring kit. You can create your own cheekbones! Look into the mirror and make a fishy face by sucking in your cheeks. Apply a matte bronzer below the hollows you've just created, working back toward your temples (fade the product gradually as you go). Then, apply a matte cream blush in your ideal shade onto the apples of your cheeks, working back toward your temples in a "C" motion. To create a defined jaw, apply the bronzer just underneath the jawline below your ears. Voila! Perfectly defined, contoured cheekbones.
