Would love tips on Sports, Type 1 Diabetes and Nutrition

My 10 year old daughter plays soccer, softball and basketball. We struggle with keeping her blood glucose within a good number range so she can play at her best. I'm finding that she has to have her last carb at least 2 hours before she plays so we know how much insulin she has on board. I know some families that continue to feed their kids with type one during sporting events. I haven't a clue how they do it. If she's over 250 bg she can't hit. Would love tips! Thanks

Is she taking shots or on a pump? My oldest son is also type 1. He has been a diabetic for 18 yrs. We had a hard time keeping his sugar at a decent level when he was taking the shots. He has a Medtronic pump along with a artificial pancras now. And with both of them working together he hasn't had a major issue with his sugar. Good quality protein and fruit are a best friend to someone playing sports.

Hi! I didn't realize you replied! She is on an Animas One Touch Ping pump and using a CGM. Love the CGM. We were looking into moving her from the Animas to the Omnipod, but our monthly insurance costs were off the charts. Is your son in college? I keep wondering how that will go for us?

Hi! I have been diabetic for 33 years, since age two. I have had the pump with both my pregnancies, and just got it back on in the last few weeks. I can tell you that it is very important to get the endocrinologist in on this. My first thought is that he/she will adjust the basal rate while she is playing. The doctor will fine tune everything until it is just right, and as you go along you, too will learn how to make adjustments.
