You may have noticed there's been a buzz about Dr. Seuss recently, that's because it's Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday this month and this year also sees the release of the Dr Seuss movie "The Lorax".  This birthday celebration also coincides with the 14th annual Read Across America Day, an event that is created and sponsored by the National Education Association.

The NEA came up with the idea for Read Across America in 1997 as a way to get kids to celebrate and become more involved with reading. Their website offers some great information about Read Across America as well as some ideas on how to get kids excited about and involved in the event. To participate in this great initiative we're sharing some of our favorite books by this celebrated author! To win one of our prizes this week, write a review for your favorite Dr. Seuss or any kids book!

To start this Dr. Seuss celebration off right, we found this classic video of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham

And now, our favorites!

· Horton Hears a Who!:Horton Hears a WhoHorton the elephant of the Jungle of Nool hears a small speck of dust talking to him. The speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville, inhabited by microscopic-sized inhabitants known as Whos and led by a character known as the Mayor.

· How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Grinch, a bitter, cave-dwelling, cat-like creature tries to steal everything related to Christmas by impersonating Santa Claus. Eventually he realizes he has a heart for Christmas after all.

· The Cat in the Hat: The Cat in the Hat brings his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, to a household of two young children one rainy day. Exotic and exuberant forms of chaos ensue while the children wonder how they are going to explain what happens to their mother.

· The Lorax: The LoraxChronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax (a mossy, bossy, man-like creature resembling an emperor tarmin) who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler.

· Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!: One of the few books published after Dr. Seuss’ death, the story surrounds a school that is well liked by its students notably because of its many eccentric teachers.

So there are our favorite Dr. Seuss books, but what if you spend time with a child who isn’t old enough to read yet, or simply won’t? Learninggamesforkids.com is a great website that features a number of free games for preschool and elementary school age children. I love Dr. Seuss and I recently came across his book, "My Many Colored Days".An innovative and unusual book by Dr. Seuss; using a colorful array of animals to portray feelings while staying true to his recognizable rhyming scheme. This book is a timeless gem for children and Seuss fans of all ages. The color associations simply explain and express how anyone may feel on any given day and gives children words to express any feelings they may have. It also shows that it is okay to be different. This book has helped my two year old share his emotions by telling us that he is having a busy ?yellow day? or a slow sluggish ?brown day?!

My kids and I love all the Dr. Seuss books. We have a collection of them at home given from family and bought ourselves a few. My oldest son reads it to his brothers all the time too.

I reviewed Dr. Seuss' The Foot Book. I've used this book to spark talk about the difference between our feet and the 'foot' unit of measurement. Then we would measure each child's foot and compare it to a ruler. Always a fun activity!

My personal favorites from childhood are "In a People House" and "Put me in the Zoo." I guess they are more obscure!

I grew up on Dr Seuss books and I have to say i loved all of them. i bought Oh the places you'll go for mainly my 4 year old daughter but found my 2 year old son jumping in my lap. he actually sat there and listened to the whole book which is really amazing to me because he doesn't have the attention span yet to sit there .They both loved it . Dr Seuss was incredible with his wording and how he put books together. Anyone who has never read one of his books needs too. I love how this book stress's self esteem and teaches rhyming and is easy for children how are learning to read. Thank you Dr Seuss for keeping me entertained as a child and my children and the future children of the family

I look forward to the Read Across America event every year. At my job we alot 2 hours to read a Dr. Seuss book to the children that come to shop with their parents. I read "The Lorax" but found it a little difficult for the younger ones but it would be better to read for the older children. The book had a great moral story behind it. But one of my favorites that I also read was "Are you my Mother". It is a very sweet story and the kids love to interact with that one. Can't wait for next year!

The book that I have loved since I was a little girl and now read to my children is "Are you my mother". Such a cute book and my children love reading it because they love the different animals the baby bird goes to. They get so into the book and say that is silly how can a cow be a birds mother.

I've been a Seuss fan as long as I can remember, and even read at least one of his books to my high school students on Read Across America Day when I used to teach. This year my three-year-old and I have participated in several Seuss story times at area bookstores, libraries, and Target. We agree with your Top 5 List, especially now that my daughter has a longer attention span. When she was younger, she loved her board book edition of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. It had a fish "abacus" at the top, and she was very proud once she was able to could count and identify the colors of the fish as she slid them across the bar.
