Paula Deen "In Bad Taste"?

For a Food Network chef as well-known for her Southern twang as she is for her love of mayonnaise and butter-laden dishes, Paula Deen’s recent admission that she’s been suffering from type 2 diabetes for the past 3 years has some questioning why she continues to whip up such high-fat meals. And no one is more vocal about his disdain for her fatty and sugary fare than fellow cook Anthony Bourdain.

Bourdain sat down with Eater to discuss his reaction to Paula Deen’s recent announcement that she’s had diabetes for three years now and has signed on with a pharmaceutical company to endorse a drug she takes to manage her disease.

When asked whether he feels Deen’s plan to endorse the diabetes medication while dishing out dangerously high-fat foods is hypocritical, Bourdain quips, “When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 Diabetes... It's in bad taste if nothing else.”

While discussing her condition on the Today show Paula Deen did defend her cooking by explaining to Al Roker that she has always told viewers that this type of food should not be consumed on a daily basis. Deen explains, “I share with you all these yummy, fattening recipes, but I tell people, in moderation... it's entertainment. People have to be responsible. Like I told Oprah, 'Honey, I'm your cook, not your doctor.' You have to be responsible for yourself.”

What do you think of what Anthony Bourdain has to say about Paula Deen’s cooking style?

Do you think Paula Deen’s plan to endorse diabetes medication and cook high-fat fare sends the wrong message?

I'm not a fan of this kind of food, but I do think that Paula Deen is missing out on a huge opportunity to change the way she cooks, to reinvent herself and her dishes in a healthier way - not bland, tasteless or skimpy. We all change when life throws a curveball. (Was it really a curve for her though? She must have know the risks.) Paula should cook on her show as she cooks for herself. Nowadays, the market is leaning towards tasty, healthy eating (primal diet), she should catch up now that she has good reason. Just my 2 cents...

Honestly, I have never cared for Paula Deen's cooking style or her show. I do believe it is hypocritical to endorse the medication and continue with all that butta! I understand that everyone wants to make more money, but feel this is not "in good taste"

I adore Paula Deen and that sweeeeet southern personalty. Thats like saying someone allergic to chocolate should never share a recipe for choclate chip cookies!! Paula shares so many recipes, whether they are from the viewers, her own or her families. Why should she discuss her medical issues with everyone? And, besides that, she may have diabetes, but she isnt dead. She can eat some of her recipes and at one point these are the foods she did eat growing up on. I dont know, I dont get Anthony Bourdain's comment...PLEASE!!! Paula having diabetes doesnt change my feelings for her in the least!! She is one of a kind!!

I love love Paula Deen and wish her the best. Ever since this Bourdain said a remark regarding Paula Deen, Rachel Ray and Guy Fieri, He is does not impress me at all.

Paula Dean is brave to have come forward and was aware of the negative backlash I'm sure. I think using natural ingrediants like butter and real cheese is smarter than using the "bucket of margerine". Eating these type of foods should be done in moderation. And on another note, why do we insist on kicking people when they are down?

It's unreasonable to think that just because Paula has a "TV Show" about Southern Cooking, that it gives anyone the right to blame her for their lack of discipline & being proactive in their own health! True Southern food recipes call for butter & grease & I'm sure many naysayers have laughed each time she commented about either of them! If one lives out everything they watch on TV, they may need to change to an "all good" channel, because they're easily influenced~good luck finding one! AND, Paula has every right to process her disease & work out her own feelings & struggles with it. She is human, & it's hard to accept & adapt to any disease~not to mention, change a whole TV show that is devoted to keeping those old Southern food traditions in the memory of those who enjoys "Granny's" cooking on holidays~like me. She will rise above this & help millions! Never close your heart to those who are imperfect~you may learn something about yourself~I know, I learn every day.

I actually lost quite a bit of respect for her. In a world where it's easier to take a pill than work naturally towards managing your disease, she is the perfect example of the problem. Diabetes is a major problem in America and far too many people are content with using prescriptions to manage it, rather than choosing appropriate foods. Rather than turn herself into a role model, it seems she'd rather be an enabler.

Thank you Tony.. I am so glad you spoke up. Instead of falling in like cattle off to the slaughter house. What she did was wrong. No matter the "why".. The almighty dollar seems to be her focus. I feel so betrayed.

Seriously, people need to get a grip and relax. There are much more important things in the world happening that require much more concern! So what if she promotes butter and lard! To each their own! She is not forcing down your throat, and in all reality, we all know that it does make it more delicious! Unfortunately, to every action there is a reaction. Anyone can use anything in case of excess. So she's promoting a product that would help the consequences. Ludacris; yes. But soon, she'll be promoting a depression pill for all you people that can't find something else to complain about! Just a thought! As I said, to each their own! =)

I like Paula Deen and watch her shows for entertainment. I do not make her meals nor do I eat those types of meals. Everyone has to take responsibility for their own actions, including putting food in their mouth. Do not blame others for what you choose to eat or how you cook your meals - that's stupid. I find Anthony Bourdain to be a rude person, so I disregard his comments on others.

Diabetes is a terrible debilitating desiese. I watched my Mother go through having her toes amputated, she had kidney failure and was on kidney dialysis 3 times a week for 4 hours at a time that left her so weak that so hardly could speak she had to measure everything thing she drank and it was very little that she could drink she was always so thirsty it caused congestive heart failure. I'm scared to that i'll get it i try to watch what i eat and i exercise regulary and have my blood checked. I hope Paula does everything in her power to stop any progressing of her Diabetes. If not she will pay for it in the future.

I think she was very wrong in promoting food to others that gave herself type 2 diabetes and hiding it for years, yet comes out only because she was offered a deal from a pharmaceutics company, now tell me that isnt all about self centered personal gain! So now she wants to be the poster child for type 2 diabetes, she would still be hiding it if she wasn't getting paid to come out. She should have been honest to start with, to hide something like this from the public while still promoting her recipes to her followers is just wrong!

:I have no respect for her, it's all about her "brand".. she could have spoken up 3 years ago, talked about her health and changes that she has UNDOUBTEDLY had to make in her personal diet, and with her influence, could have been a positive role model. She sold out.

I think she needs to change her cooking style the way she cooks food for her diabetes and share it with others
