Can You Be Makeup Free?
Posted June 6, 2010

We’ve all heard of Casual Fridays, a day some companies set aside to allow their employees a more laid back dress code.  But have you heard of the new trend making its way around offices called Makeup Free Mondays?  The online magazine, The Beauty Bean, started "the movement" aimed at encouraging women to embrace their inner beauty by tossing their makeup for one day every week.

Creator of the Beauty Bean, Alexis Wolfer, talks about how lots of women who participate in Makeup Free Mondays have written to her to say how liberated they feel after getting over the initial hump of not wearing makeup to work.  Wolfer goes on to talk about how she and the women she works with have handled the makeup-less days, "we found ourselves apologizing for not wearing makeup, as if we were doing something wrong.  We’re not, however, doing anything ’wrong’ and no one even seems to be noticing."

The idea that women have to wear makeup in our society in order to look professional has been instilled in us our whole lives, but why?  Why do we feel the need to cover up wrinkles, lengthen our lashes, or darken our lips ever day of the week when men don’t?  Do we do this for ourselves or the people around us?  Makeup Free Mondays is a way for women to question and redefine the idea of what beauty really is all about.

If you feel like tossing the lipstick one day out of the week, the online magazine gives six ways to participate in Makeup Free Mondays.  One way to participate and give back at the same time is to make a donation of unused, unopened makeup to some organizations like Dress For Success, that help women who don’t have the means to purchase clothing and cosmetics for job interviews.

What do you think of Makeup Free Mondays?

Is this something you might try at your place of work?

I am a make up free person most of the times...only on rare occassions like BIG events do i wear make up....I love the skin I am in:)) BUt to be make up free,u really need to take care of the break outs..so when i get 1,i just dab some concealer on tht 1 single spot. Skin regime becomes very imp. Besides,i n hot sweaty summers ,skin needs to breathe too,n its tough with all the make up.. so "Happy no make up day!! " would luv to c every1 in their own skins...after all every1 is beautiful .

I think it depends on the person. For someone who will not walk out of their house without makeup this will seem ridiculous to them. They feel comfortable with makeup on. To them make-up is their cup of coffee, once they put it on they're ready to rule the world. For myself, I wear makeup but not too much so this will be a nice change especially if everyone else is doing it. I won't feel as if I stood out.

Thanks for the mention of Dress for Success, it is an excellent organization doing a lot of good, it also has locations world wide. I'm all for giving this a try. Though I do see a type of discrimination that goes on on no make up days vs make up days. Almost as though people feel you're lazy, or less than a professional...even though it's the same me with or without, bringing the same level of skills, education and dedication. Now this makes me wonder about those who do the judging... are they themselves using the makeup as a mask or a crutch to hide behind? Are they in the business of beauty and make their income from this? Or does it just make a person feel more beautiful enhancing their natural beauty to its fullest? Then it makes you question just "who" defines what beauty is, since it's different in every part of the world and culture. Makes one think or at least question, and isn't this what the article is about.

I love make up but I could go without it. I don't wear that much maybe mascara, eye shadow, bronzer, and some lip gloss.

I love makeup! I am a stay at home mom and I only wear moisturizer and gloss. On the weekends I go all out!! I don't have to wear makeup to make myself look good!!

i use to not wear makeup and then i got into it when my husband deployed, it gave me something to do. i never wore makeup to work so it wouldn't have bothered me then but now is probably a different story. i never leave the house without at LEAST eyeliner, liquid lipstick, and eyeshadow! Its not a matter of that i think i look bad without it, it just makes me feel the best that i can me and if i feel good i look good!

It used to be I would not leave the house without makeup on. Even to the gas station! Now that I've gotten more mature, I usually just wear eyliner and masacara, and thats to work, to accentuate my eyes as I wear glasses. It takes too long to put all that "stuff" on and then you have to worry about if it smeared. I love going to the beach at any given moment, and boy oh boy, when your makeup smears!! I love the natural look much better! Wash your face, put moisturizer on with sunscreen...and out the door!

I don't wear makeup. I may put on eyeliner and some lipstick or gloss at times, but I never wear foundation, blush eye shadow nothing else. I am forty and I look much younger. I enjoy the freedom of not having to check my makeup. I drink plenty of water and keep my face clean and moisterized daily and nightly.

The one product I will not leave the house without is mascara. I think having a makeup free day is probably good for the skin!

i brush my hair n teeth n swipe on some chapstick and i am on my way. i think it is awful that some women think they can't leave the house or be seen without a full face of make-up.

It's weird when some women think you're trying to impress a guy or trying to be fancy out there even if you wear a little bit of makeup. They must be old school or just uneducated about the true beauty of using makeup. It's not because we need to 'put a face on...' Ha ha ha!

I really don't wear much to begin with.
inspirek0 says: on Jun 19, 2010
Now that I think about it, I have never seen any of my co-workers without makeup. Which is funny because I think I came to work without makeup only one day and no on said anything either. It was always the same smiles too. Although my skin suffers so I try to go without makeup on the days I don't really go out at all. I don't need makeup to head to the grocery store, but sometimes it gives me a boost of confidence when I am at work.

Very rarely do i wear make up. I use to at least wear eye shadow and foundation/powder when i would go out to the bar with my hubby, but the past year i find that its just time consuming and i look equally as good with out it (i hope lol).
ok2bme says: on Jun 23, 2010
It's funny how i have changed. When I was younger, and obviously prettier, I had to have my make up on and my hair just so to even go outside to check the mail. Now, I don't care...the colors on my face do not determine who I am. I am just me and I am now happy being me. I only wear makeup when I feel like putting it on. My husband and family love me with or without it. Every day of our lives together my husband tells me i am beautiful. So I have lost my insecurities about such things. Exceptions to my idc if I wear it or not, are job interviews, formal events, and maybe just maybe high school reunions, lol. But I will still always bemoan the fact that i have wimpy colorless eyelashes...mascara ads always catch my eye.

I have never been big into makeup. I barely where any most of the time. occasionally I might wear some mascara or maybe light powder. If it is a special occasion, I will go all out but then it usually makes me itch the whole time (even hypoallergenic). Not worth the aggravation most of the time.
Shonjo says: on Jun 25, 2010
I use a little concealer and mascara, sometimes blush and light powder (for my oily skin), but that's about it. I frequently leave the house without makeup on, especially on the weekends. However, it's easy for me to be ok with this, because I'm still fairly young. When I'm 50, will I feel the same way? I guess only time (and gravity!) will tell.

I think this is awesome. I am the occasional make-up wearer some mascara and bronzer or blush. I am the youngest woman in my office of 8 and wear the least makeup. I have spoken to a few of the younger ladies and they always "WISH" they could not wear makeup, I am going to let them know about this. They have mentioned their husbands have told them not to wear make up, these woman are not much older than me but feel they need to wear makeup. Make Up Free Mondays!!! MUFM I'm going to tweet this!!!

I really don't understand makeup. I'm a lipstick gal but not all the time. The rest of the makeup I go without. Of course I don't have a problem with problem skin or anything so I see some women's need to wear it to feel better about themselves. But I don't think we should be wearing it because its accepted or men want us to.

I think Make up free Monday is a great idea. I don't know how many of my coworkers will agree. It is certainly worth a try.
abruntra says: on Jun 28, 2010
I would love for that to be common place - sadly, I don't think it would fly in the consulting world. On the weekends, I am definitely make up free. On the weekdays, if it can't be done in 5 minutes, it won't be!
poamflores says: on Jun 29, 2010
I usually wear makeup, however, on the weekends I try to go makeup free. During the weekdays my routine is less than 5 minutes!

I think it is a great idea. I usually don't wear much makeup. I feel that my skin stays clearer when I don't cover it up with a lot of makeup.

I hardley ever wear makeup and I might apply it on a special occasion. I do not like the feel of makeup on my skin and I make an effort to take care of my skin. All my life people have mistaken me for being at least 10 years younger than my current age and that is with me being overweight. I recently started apply lip gloss, but most days it is some type of chapstick.

i go out with out make up all the time but i also think make up free days is kinda dumb, if you want to wear it wear it if you comfortabel with out the go with out it. as long as you are dresses apropreatly for your job thats what maters. i don't think women should feel like the have to wear make up, but i also under stand that thats what it makes some people fell comfortable

I think that Makeup Free Mondays is a great idea!!! I can make women feel good about themselves and boost their confidence in themselves and in others. However, I do understand how some women might feel uncomfortable with taking off their makeup. Some women feel as if they really need it and can't go without it. Therefor. I don't thnk it should be mandatory. Would I do it? Yes!!!

I LOVE MAKEUP
missdaisymae says: on Jul 14, 2010
Well, I LOVE my makeup and I feel like if I'm not wearing it, I am less confident in myself. I wear it for me; to feel great in my own skin. I love the idea of makeup free mondays, however, as a great way for women to feel empowered and to showcase their natural beauty, and also to give their skin a break! Hey, if you've got it flaunt it, right? I might even give it a try! :)

Ever since my first baby i NEVER wear makeup ! I used to wear makeup everywhere i went but now i see a beauty i have never seen before. i actually believe that i look better without makeup on. If i do wear it its just mascara and a little foundation (bare minerals is the bomb). my husband tells me not to wear it because he likes me natural. Hey thats the way God made us, why cover it up ?!

I don't wear make-up unless I am going somewhere special . I figure I wore enough in my teens through my thirtys that I am exempt from wearing it now . lol
GypsyPink says: on Jul 24, 2010
Ever since I married 4 years ago and started my own at-home business, I've stopped wearing tons of makeup. I've always used moisturizers so my routine now is simply, moisturizer, mascara & lip gloss. I love the sunkissed glow of my face and actually feel better about myself. I agree with clintongrl590 when she stated "...now I see a beauty I have never seen before."

I love makeup..the idea is not to have it caked on your face and look completely overdone. It is very rare that someone has naturally perfect skin and I just like to even out my skin tone with an extremely light foundation. It is also my SPF because it protects your face from UV rays and free radicals. I think makeup is a fun way to express myself and I feel more confident when I accentuate my good features or have a really fun eyeshadow. It is almost like getting my hair done, there is no limit to the different looks I can do. I am a creative person and I also want to put my best face forward because that is my profession..cosmetology!
danidudack says: on Jul 25, 2010
I also want to add that a lot of people are not interested in makeup because they do not know the right way to use it and get frustrated because the makeup application doesn't come out the way it could it they were educated on how to customize their makeup according to their facial features and skin tones. I know finding the right shade of liquid foundation can be really frustrating.

The only time i wear makeup is when I go out to a bar/club. Other than that, I'm told by most people that i pull off the natural look due to my great complexion (thanks mom)!! So hat's off to the ladies that will due this. It's better for your skin to breathe anyways!!

I don't know why any one would care if someone wore make up or not. It's not like deodarant optional(Yuck). People wear what makes them feel good. So what if it is make up, favorite pair of shoes, or a perfume. I love myself inside and out and have been told that I look beautiful without make-up. When I wear it, it is something for me.
