Getting Paid To Lose Weight
Posted January 5, 2010

There are many reasons why people want to shed extra pounds; they want to live a healthier lifestyle, participate in more rigorous activities, boost their self-confidence, etc.  For some, the idea of getting paid to lose weight is the biggest motivator of all.  In the recent past we have heard reports of companies offering their employees incentives like gift cards and cruises if they lost some weight with the idea that in the long run the company will save on health costs if they have a healthier staff.  But, what if a complete stranger offered you cash?

A new independently run website that makes money on advertising and sponsorships, HealthyWage.com, is offering people the chance to sign up for a weight loss challenge with the promise of putting cash in their hands should they succeed in their goals to shed the pounds.  The website relies on corporate sponsors to provide the cash rewards to obese members who succeed in the challenge.

So far, some 5,000 people have signed up for the challenge through the site.  Members have the choice of either signing up for free and receiving a $100 cash prize if they succeed or putting down a maximum of $300 from their own pockets for a chance to win a higher stakes prize of $1000.  Since people who enter the program must be in the obese range, most of them will have to lose somewhere between 30 and 80 pounds in a 12-month period.

A recent article from Time magazine featured the website and interviewed one of the participants in the challenge.  Welmoed Sisson, who weighs over 200 pounds, must lose 50 pounds in 12 months to fall into a healthier range and receive her cash prize.  Sisson says, "Sure I’d like to look and feel better, but it is so subjective.  Money is a better motivator because it is so tangible.  You can hold it in your hand."

What do you think of the new website that offers cash prizes for losing weight?

Do you think cash is a good motivator for people to lose the weight?

Interesting. Reminds me of the prime time tv news show a year or 2 back that did an experiment it gave people that signed up a specified time to lose the weight, if they didn't their "fat" pictures and information would be revealed. I'm game. But I'd prefer to do it for myself first. This would be an added bonus, icing.

when the economy turns to the dumps, people right now would probably sign up for almost anything just to get a little bit of cash in their pockets. Cash is a huge motivator to SOME people, not going to generalize and say all people. However if you feel you are doing it out of greed instead of a better living/lifestyle, then i dont see the purpose of this. you need to enjoy and love working out in order to also heal/cleanse the body of impurities. Money would probably be the last resort for me LOL.

I think it is a great idea. If it really works, then that would be at least a start for obese people to have a good motivator and when and if they reach their goal they might be more inclined to keep it off. Losing weight can be a very difficult task. Money motivates a lot of people.

Money is a great motivator! In this economy, we are already starving ourselves thin against our will, why not be paid for it. It sounds harsh but its true. Times are getting really hard and it would be nice to be paid to lose weight you already want to lose!

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Money talks. Look at the show The Biggest Loser. Yeah those folks want to lose the weight, but they also want that big prize at the end.

I think this is a great idea also. Money, especially with this current economy, can be a great motivator for those who are trying to really lose weight.

It can be could! But would rather see some of these companies for weight loss donate their food, equipment, or whatever else they sell to help some of these people! Having Help to win the cash would be a better way to go in my book! And the companies would have free advertisments from the people who actually lost the weight!

I think it depends on if people on really really weight for a real reason or not. I mean come on some people will not do it for a real reason. I would do it, but I would also do it for the real reason.

Money shouldn't motivate people to lose weight. You want to lose weight so you can be healthy, not for a quick buck.
ldsmom2201 says: on Jan 07, 2010
If your sole purpose is to win the money, it is not worth the effort. However, if you have already decided to lose weight for your health, then the money can help be a motivator. Like every other "bad habit", if you are not doing it for yourself, you are not likely to be successful in the long run. Having said that, there are times that you ask yourself if it is worth continuing on with the "new habits" and that is when the money could help get you through those rough patches.

Yes, cash is a great motivated to get people to lose weight. It will give them more of a reason to become healthy. I would love to and have be trying to drop about 30 pounds. It is just so hard to stick with it. Maybe this program would motivate me enough to achieve my goals.
Suparstarz714 says: on Jan 07, 2010
Yes Cash is a great motivator to get people to loose weight, however I think instead of require people to loose 30-50 lbs, it should be based on how much you actually weigh. If I lost 30 lbs I would be considered underweight, and that would be unhealthy.
garfieldflacat says: on Jan 07, 2010
Yes, this is a program that I would sign up for and stick to! Cash is a huge motivator, and plus I'm always thinking about eating less and exercising more, so why not get paid to do something that I already want to accomplish?
SistaRu says: on Jan 08, 2010
Yes, i would love to do it.
curlysue says: on Jan 08, 2010
I love this idea!!! The Person that came up with this is a genius!!! I think money is a great motivator and it would make anyone have the strength to get up off the couch and loose those extra pounds that are making them unhealthy.
Steelersfan says: on Jan 09, 2010
I have signed up, but the website seems to need some work. I have nothing to loose but the weight, so figured I would give it a try. Thx for the tip.
terpsichore15 says: on Jan 09, 2010
I feel that it is a win-win situation specially for those who participate. They get to be healthier and get paid for that. I just hope some people wont use this as a scam to fool people.

Well well well, I won't mind doing something like this. Lose weight and your Pockets get bigger < Not a Bad Thing............

Money motivates most people for LOTS of stuff, why not to lose weight?
JoJoMama26 says: on Jan 11, 2010
Umm... I wonder if I quality? Dang, I already lost 20 pounds, so I'm out of the obese range :) too bad I didn't do the website! Oh well, I'll keep going with WW. I do think this is awesome, though admittedly odd. It seems strange that some random person should give you money for losing weight... but if it really works, power to them!
applejax987 says: on Jan 12, 2010
absolutly! money motivates everyone!
tastebud12 says: on Jan 12, 2010
well, i think that even though money is a great motivator, losing weight for money almost guarantees gaining the weight back. One must lose weight for themselves, because they need to for health reason or simply because they want to shed some pounds. In this case, joiners must be obese which means that they need to lose weight for health reasons and if the only motivator is cash, they will not keep the weight off. That is my concern and I am one that does need to lose alot of weight so I can relate and no, I will not join for a measly $100 cash prize.

I've lost over 100lbs since April of 09 and I can honestly say if I had been offered money I would have lost it much faster. I don't think what this program or site is offering is enough though but if its free why not?
hamster_mom says: on Jan 19, 2010
I think this is a great idea. I know I need to lose some weight I might just check out this site now.
kellyld says: on Jan 20, 2010
Sure! I'd lose weight for money!
Betsy472 says: on Jan 21, 2010
Are they going to be able to keep it off. I always thought if you don't do it for yourself you are setting yourself up for failure..It is a great idea though..
Ambiguoussage says: on Jan 22, 2010
AHHHHHHH!!! So not fair! I lost 40 lbs! I mean I lost the weight due to me switching to a healthier lifestyle, but getting paid for it would have been nice!
thethriftygeek says: on Jan 22, 2010
This is a great idea. I am going to have to check it out because I am in the process of losing weight and what a better incentive to add to the goal. Thanks!

I think CASH is a great motivator for losing weight....I'm in a contest now with my sister-in-laws and the pot is at $500.00, we each put in $50.00 bucks and weigh in and we have until 4/1/10 to lose the weight.
yoshimi4free says: on Jan 27, 2010
good idea! many people have it in their head that they need to lose weight, and once they start they don't always follow through. so money would definitely motivate me...... i mean, it would work more-so than without the money.
fidelina01 says: on Jan 27, 2010
yes i would love to do this .... such a great idea $$
2beckie says: on Jan 27, 2010
I think that money is a great motivator, however you also have to have the mentality that it is also for a healthier lifestyle. Motivation and determination have to work together. I have a friend who after giving up smoking for a healthier lifestyle, gained 40 pounds. She became reclusive and depressed. After seeing an infomercial for the million dollar body she began excercising and using their weightloss products. Her results were fabulous. You see her motivation was a chance to win $250,000.00. Her weight kept melting off and she won $1000. Her body kept getting toned and then came a $10,000.00 win. She made it to the finals in Vegas and all her hard worked paid off. She won the $250,000.00. She is now a personal trainer in Arizona and a coach for the million dollar body and p90x. That truly is motivational!!!!!

I think it is a great idea. I would not be willing to put my own money into it, but to sign up for free, and try to lose the weight I am already trying to lose anyway, with the possibility of an extra $100 when I reach my goal...why not? It would feel great to spend that hard earned money on clothes in my new, smaller size.
taraware says: on Jan 28, 2010
Losing weight is something that I do for myself already. A cash bonus would be just that, a bonus, not a motivator.
sisikat says: on Feb 02, 2010
OMG this is great I think. My boyfriend has recently lost 50 pounds. He simply did it for his own health. But he want to loose another 50. I think he can do it. But why not make some money for doing it too!!! I think its a great extra insentive.
eldapc11 says: on Feb 07, 2010
I think this a good idea. Most people want to loose weight anyway, why not get paid for doing so.

My work is going to be doing something similar only not online. My coworkers and I are each putting in $20 a week and whoever loses the most (percentage) for that week will get the money. It's a motivation for all of us to lose weight. Even if you don't win the money you will still win by being healthier!
Adrienne331 says: on Mar 21, 2010
I have watch television shows where people is losing weight in front of millions and what do they gain except weight loss? Money? 15 of Fame? I agree with this method because I would do it to me it is a great motivator to get me moving to lose weight I may not do sooner rather then waiting later. My goal would be to win not only money but at weight loss and to me both are a bonus.

Anyone trying to eat healthy and lose weight should be rewarded. Their reward is in a longer, healthier life. This incentive might get people started. I'm willing!
