Do You Do Black Friday?
Posted November 28, 2009

For those of you that were brave enough to wade through the crowds of Black Friday shoppers this year, you may have noticed that not everyone stuck it out all day long.  The Wall Street Journal reported Friday evening that Black Friday started out strong, but slowly thinned out by afternoon.  This is because shoppers were not willing to stick around unless they were seeing some major discounts.

A lot of the savings we were seeing this year came in the form of doorbusters and a good deal of sales on electronics.  Unless you were lined up outside the door just as stores opened in the early morning, you may not have seen too many savings.  The Wall Street Journal reports that Andrew Harris, a Dallas police officer, planned his Black Friday out perfectly when he showed up for a sale at Target at 3am, 2 hours before the store even opened, and bought a 32" LCD HDTV for $246 (a savings of $180).

Wal-Mart also saw lots of traffic, with some customers showing up the evening before to camp out in front of the store.  Stores like Wal -Mart recognize the need to get shoppers in by enticing them with deep discounts since many consumers have expressed a need to spend less this year than last.

Aix Partners LLP
released a study earlier this year with some data about the upcoming holiday season.  They found that 88 percent of consumers planned to spend less this year than last year and 82 percent said that what they do spend money on will be purchased from value stores like Wal -Mart.  Though the numbers sound bleak for retailers, the National Retail Federation is only predicting a 1 percent drop in U.S. holiday sales, which is up from last years 3.4 percent decline.

Did you venture out to the stores this Black Friday?

Do you plan on spending less on gifts this holiday season than you did last year?

I chose to not attend black Friday this year, but partly because the items which were deeply discounted were not items on my shopping list. I am spending less this year, but not by too much as my family has keep a managable budget on holidays all of our lives. What I did do was to purchase everything my son wished for online from Amazon... just a few clicks and his shopping was done complete with free shipping.

I really hate the crowds. Unless I REALLY need something that is deeply discounted, I avoid shopping on Black Friday. Stores are being so competitive, that there will still be great sales before Christmas and online.

I actually attended Black Friday for the 1st time this year. It wasn't as crowded as I thought it was going to be. Some places had really good sales, but not every place.

Yes normally, but I am 38 weeks pregnant so I did not go this time.

I didn't go the Black Friday shopping adventure.....however, I DID have to venture into Target for something non-holiday related. This was later in the day and the store really was quite empty from what I had expected. I was happy and surprised at the same time. I was in and out in under 15 minutes! Thankfully so!

I didn't go black friday shopping, however i did already do my shopping before hand and it is all done. I went one year for black friday and never again. It is too crazy for me.

I didn't go black friday shopping this year, but last year I did. It's really fun, (after all, what day dedicated to shopping isn't?) but the only turn-off for me is the crowds. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a little competition, but after awhile, I just need an escape. Plus, most of my favorite stores, such as Sephora, aren't even worth it because the deals aren't too outstanding. But hey, maybe I'm just bitter because I was low on cash yesterday.

I was done shopping (all 5 presents I actually bought) before Black Friday - sale or no sale, shopping on Black Friday seems to me a masochistic choice of how to spend a holiday ;). The rest of our gifts will be homemade (we make candy and cookies and other fun stuff like pop up cards and creches) and charitable gifts (Heifer, etc). We don't have kids, so it makes it a lot simpler...

We started at the midnight opening at Prime Outlets in Williamsburg. Kate Spade had wonderful deals. Everything 50% off marked price plus i had an additional 10% off coupon. Weather was too rainy and cold to just roam. I visited fewer stores this year. Usually Best Buy is always a stop but not this year.
abbashiikh says: on Nov 29, 2009
The only time i like black friday is when i need a specific product and it costs too much then i get to save 50 percent of the regular price.

No! I have never shopped on Black Friday. I absolutely hate crowds and from what I hear, some people behave ridiculous. There is nothing out there that I want so bad that I would be willing to fight my way through crowds of crazy people. I highly prefer to shop early in the morning, on weekdays... during normal days. I don't care if it's not a sale. I'm an avid couponer and almost always find a way to get what I want for a good price.

On-line shopping on Thanksgiving and Black Friday is the best of both worlds. No crowds, with early bird deals and free shipping all around. Black Friday was the first day of snow here in the midwest and I was warm and cozy shopping from home.
RockerChick91 says: on Nov 29, 2009
I don't do Black Fridays because I can't stand the crowds and the idea of fighting someone over a discount. The whole point of shopping was to be happy, not start a brawl.
sartom says: on Nov 29, 2009
We did go out on Black Friday, but not at odarkthirty in the morning. My husband and I went about 11 or so because what we wanted was going to be on sale all day and was not a "hot" item. We went to Target and got two Christmas presents for the kids. Nothing else was "on sale" that we really wanted or needed. I only go out when there is something on the kids list that they want. We thought about going to Sears for the washer and dryer deal (500 for the pair) but each Sears was only getting 4 sets, and I did not want to stand in line for the chance of maybe possibly getting one. If they want to sell them that badly, they would have that sale everyday and help out the "little" people. more.

I did not get up early to go shopping this year. I already have alot of my shopping done and there was nothing worth getting up early for me to buy. This year I have been very creative and have made personalized baskets for everyone with a specific theme.
jlincon71 says: on Nov 29, 2009
I can not do black friday i can't stans the crowds and then waiting in line for hours...no thank you i rather stay in.
nata78sha says: on Nov 29, 2009
I have been out to the stores on Black Friday before.. but not this year. We are stationed at Fort Irwin which is in the middle of no where in CA. So there really wasnt anything that I wanted THAT BAD - not enough to drive an hour and half and then fight crowds and wait in line for 45 minutes to check out. SOOO I did my black friday shopping online this year. I know quite a few people who are waiting for cyber monday.
Trista says: on Nov 29, 2009
I do not go shopping on Black Friday as a rule and did not this year. I do quite a bit of cyber shopping. My budget is tight this year so my Christmas list is not as long as it has been in years past.

i did do blsck friday and if u go a little later the crowds arent as bad and u can still score killer deals...
brimcgrail says: on Nov 29, 2009
I have shopped on Black Friday in the past and will NOT do it again-I have been shoved , pushed, stepped on, cursed at, and stood in lines for hours to then be told that the product I was looking for was sold out....

I did go Black Friday shopping this year. Target and Walmart were the only stores I visited and it was well worth it. Got what was on my xmas shopping list :)
mommyducky says: on Nov 30, 2009
I didn't make it to black friday this year due to lack of funds, I can't shop for christmas gifts. I am going to do my shopping online with gift cards that people have given me and that I have signed up for. I will do amazon. That is the best. My brother went and he said that the deals weren't that great and that there were so many people that it wasn't even worth it. He got freaked out and left without even buying what he went to get. He said it wasn't worth the hassle.

Nope~~~ Not worth the aggravation & in Chicago it's not only aggravating it's dangerous!!!

No, No, No.... Too crowded and I like to take my time and shop and not be rushed.
redkat3274 says: on Nov 30, 2009
I went but only b/c there was one particular gift I wanted to get my toddler. It wasn't too bad here in DFW but then again I was only in the store for 20 whole minutes!
tmaier says: on Nov 30, 2009
If the other shoppers were a bit nicer the experience would not be so bad.
cleanliving says: on Nov 30, 2009
Black Friday - No way! Too early to rise, too many people, too much traffic. I got the same deals online - from the comfort of home!
laine17 says: on Nov 30, 2009
I hate Black Friday. I hate the crowds, the fighting for parking spots. Not worth it to me, Id rather pay the extra money than deal with the traffic and crabby people.
luanlee54 says: on Nov 30, 2009
I don't like the whole concept or name of Black Friday either. This year I am trying to mostly buy locally made items. There are some beautiful things available at farmer's markets, church fairs, craft coops, etc. That way we are supporting our neighbors and not sending our money to China. (Just wish one of our neighbors made flat screen TVs and laptops..)

I thought about shopping this year. I usually never do because the crowds are unbearable. This year since I'm trying to be more frugal it was a little more appealing, but not enough to get up super early to fight the crowd. I did search online for deals though.

I did go BF shopping this year! I did not see to many great deals though!
chintel says: on Dec 01, 2009
I went BF shopping for the first time this year and will never go again. It is not worth getting up that early in the morning to save a few bucks. I'd rather pay the extra money than wait in a line for an hour to check out.

Why shop on Black Friday when you can use the internet for Cyber Monday?
deenice22 says: on Dec 02, 2009
I agree it is not worth getting up that early. The majority of the door busters are very limited in quantity. I did not see a lot of really good deals this year. When I am in the market for electronics (especially desktop computers, camcorders, or TVs), I have stood in the lines to get these products. I didn't always get what I set out for but when I was able to get what I was looking for the savings were great.
jlindseyc says: on Dec 02, 2009
I go but not early...usually get started around 10. Mostly its a fun family tradition and finding especially good deals is a bonus!

I definitely do Black Friday every year. I stay up for the online shopping. Then I am up at 3 am to be at the stores by their 4 am opening time. I don't get the limited big ticket items though. With 4 children I am looking for the deals on clothing, jackets, etc. It also helps that I have a husband who will go with me.
cybrown551 says: on Dec 02, 2009
I did not go shopping on Black Friday because I rather wait until Christmas Eve to see what is on sale at that time. I did get a chance to shop online for cyber Monday.
AimeeAken says: on Dec 03, 2009
I did not because I was one of the lucky people that had to work a 10 hour day, but even if not I would not venture out. My hubby took the kiddos out to so some shopping, but that was WAY after the crowds were gone (like after 3PM) and a football game was on so the stores become empty. ( I love shopping during games) :) We do not watch football, so that works for us. My husband would never go out on black friday either. We tried it once for an item back before we had children, and it was a mad rush of people shoving each other and breaking items as they ran down the isles. It looked more like a zoo than civil people, so it is not my idea of a good time. I will buy what is on my list, and that is all. I do not go overboard and I do try to find bargains when I can. When children want something specific, that is hard to do when it is an item that never goes on sale..Everyone else is just happy with what I get them because the reason for the season is much more than just gifts.. :)

Never!! I absolutely dread the crowds on Black Friday - regardless of the sales. Most places are extending the sales this year anyway.
kmccarron19 says: on Dec 03, 2009
I go every year! I don't mind the crowds and I always do great. I love all the sales. I mostly go to Kohls to start. I love it and wouldn't miss it.

I don“t like Black Friday! There“s nothing worse than standing in line for hours--time is money, I“m not sure the sales make up for the lost time...
MadHatter says: on Dec 04, 2009
i choose to never attend black friday's mainly because each and every black friday has been cold and drizzling or even heavy rain at times. I have no patience in waiting in long lines just to get one item that is on sale and jeapordize my health.
Larak12 says: on Dec 04, 2009
I was waiting in line at bestbuy we were the 16 person in line. We got a 2 sony vios, 1 desktop, camcoder, a nano, a scanner printer, speakers and movies I live in Nebraska it was cold I had so much fun and it wasn't all Jamed up by the way it was my 1st black friday ever!!
Lusadi says: on Dec 04, 2009
I avoid black Friday every year. I am happy to leave those deals for other people. Instead, I prefer to just watch sales the entire year and purchase items for people as I find them. I have a present shelf in the closet. This has the additional benefit of allowing me to keep emergency gifts on hand for unexpected guests or a forgotten birthday.
