Oprah's Chicken Giveaway : Philanthropy or Hypocrisy?
Posted May 7, 2009

In light of our current financial predicament Oprah Winfrey has decided to do a little something for everyone.  Winfrey announced recently that she, along with KFC, would put some dinner on every table across the country.

The special promotion allows anyone to sign onto Winfrey’s website between May 5th and 6th and print out a coupon which is good for a 2-piece grilled chicken meal.  Though a free meal is probably a very helpful bonus for families suffering job losses, many are now criticizing Winfrey for her recent KFC promotion.  Most of the criticism is coming from various animal rights group.

Apparently, the Tyson company is the main supplier of chicken to KFC.  According to a recent article from U.S. News and World Report, Tyson is known to use “controlled animal feeding operations (CAFOs) – dark and tightly-packed coops where the chickens are often unable to stand up or move.  Many would consider this practice as a type of “factory farming”.

PETA is expected to show their disappointment with Winfrey’s latest promotional partnership with KFC.  PETA recently honored Winfrey with their 2008 “Person of the Year” award.  After Winfrey devoted an entire episode of her talk show to uncovering the abuse that goes on using “factory farming” techniques PETA’s president, Ingrid E. Newkirk, was quoted as saying that Winfrey used her “powerful voice to defend those without one.”

On top of harsh criticism from animal rights activists, it is also being reported that due to heavy web traffic many people have had trouble obtaining the coupons.  And redeeming them in the stores has been tough for some as well.

What do you think of the controversy surrounding Oprah Winfrey’s decision to offer free KFC meals nationwide?

Do you think the criticism coming from animal rights groups is warranted?

I saw that show and I also obtained a coupon. Yes, it was hard to get the coupon printed. No, I don't think that the criticism is warranted. I saw the show, but I think in the end, the offer does help some people who need/could use the meal.

I think that PETA and other organizations like that are just plain IGNORANT. The economy is in the crapper and you are criticizing Oprah for giving us all a free meal- COME ON!!! Wake up people. Oprah is AWESOME!!!!

Hmmmm.....let people starve to death or "free the chickens"....the human life is priceless. Is it sad what they are doing to the chickens? YES. But at the end of the day, someone who may not have ANY money and is starving will be able to eat a full dinner.

Feeding a hungry person, or helping someone out with a meal who is struggling financially is far more important in this world than some chicken. People eat chicken ALL THE TIME and are not critized. There are just those people out there that like to cause drama for no good reason.
jemappel says: on May 07, 2009
First of all, Oprah's not giving anyone a free meal...KFC is funding a promotion and Oprah is being used for the PR. I'm sick of her saying she's giving away stuff when it's really the company and she's just helping them advertise - in fact, she's probably making money for doing it. Second, why are you guys putting down chickens? Can't this be a win-win? Can't Tyson both raise chickens ethically and KFC can also give away free meals? Let's work on being nice to chickens AND helping people eat!

I think Oprah can afford to give a better free meal! I mean really free KFC, big deal. She should be supporting organic and free range farmers. If she wants to provide a meal for America's working class it should be a healthy one.
kristi3374 says: on May 08, 2009
I did get the coupons and we went to get it and it was a mad house at my KFC they stopped the whole thing as you may have heard by now and there were people in line to get this and were turned away because it was bigger than expectted
bekahjarr says: on May 08, 2009
I think this was a great free meal from Oprah! I had no trouble printing the coupon. This was an awesome idea!
janicelynne71 says: on May 08, 2009
I had no idea it was an Oprah thing. I received an email from a freebies group with a link for a free kfc meal. We live in a tiny town and while they were busier than expected, I wasn't turned away. I appreciate the free meal, it's been great for lunch. But it isn't Oprah's or KFC's job to feed us. If money's tight, there are still ways to eat healthy and cheap.
karmakaytlyn says: on May 08, 2009
I understand that many people see this chicken dinner as keeping people from starving, when in fact that is not the case. How is this going to feed the hungry and homeless when they have no access to computers. This was an obvious marketing scam and KFC quit possibly could have paid Oprah for the endorsement. Do you people not realize that business is business and business people do not do anything that is not in their best interest or serving their desires.
activemom says: on May 08, 2009
Obvious marketing scam? Business people don't do anything that isn't in their best interest? That's a pretty jaded outlook on this. On Good Morning America, they're tracking how many pounds of food are being donated to food banks across the country as part of their efforts. Most of these donations come from big food companies like Uncle Ben's who donated to the Mobile, Ala. food bank earlier this week. Can't a company do well by doing good? Does the fact that they're a for-profit company negate the benefit they're providing? Yes, it's in KFC's best interest for people to try their new item (I believe a healthier alternative to their fried chicken), but it costs them real money to provide this many free meals. Isn't that what this very site is about in many ways - an opportunity for companies to introduce and sample their new products and get feedback from people by providing free product and coupons?
MyEmptyCanvas says: on May 08, 2009
I got to use 2 out of the 4 coupons that I was allowed to print. The other 2 I had to get rain checks for last night. The chicken was good.. tasted more like baked chicken to me, but it was free so no complaints. It was easier to print the coupon earlier in the day before Oprah's show officially announced it because I had no problems. I have no comments on the PETA stuff... but all in all, if animals are mistreated prior to death, that is wrong.
shellgirl1961 says: on May 08, 2009
I can see both sides. The way that Tyson treats the chickens is not right and they should come up with a better and more ethically way of doing it. But at the same time, this promotion did help people, just not sure it helped the ones that it was aimed at. Like in another comment, if you are poor and without a home, how would you get the coupon?
DownloadJunkie says: on May 08, 2009
Well, we all have to eat. Those complaining can fast. End of story.
karenhop50 says: on May 08, 2009
I watched he show and got the coupons but have been unable to use them. I agree that it can be a win, win situation. Treat the chickens ethically and then offer everyone a chicken dinner. They took our printouts and said they will mail the free coupons, we'll see.
jasminebrianandjr says: on May 09, 2009
" Can't this be a win-win? Can't Tyson both raise chickens ethically and KFC can also give away free meals?" You would raise a chicken ethically if it were going to be a pet! It CANNOT be win-win if in the end the chicken is going to end up at KFC...LOL... Anyway...regardless whether oprah gave the coupons away, or she was being used as PR...this is a great deed and should not be criticized!
amok67 says: on May 09, 2009
It took me an hour to get the coupon. As we all know now, it caused riots and chaos! I wonder how they will still honor the million or so coupons that they are going to reissue?
snowyt says: on May 09, 2009
If this is to help people in need those people may not have the ability to print the coupons in the first place-- Idea was good- but didnt work-
agaphmou says: on May 09, 2009
Oprah did a good deed, she had good intentions.I don't know why people are putting her down. This was for the new kfc grilled chicken, much healthier than the fried version.Anyone without a pc or printer could use a friends, print them at school.work, relative's house or whatever.
villahills3 says: on May 09, 2009
Please, Oprah and KFC did a good thing...IF what PETA says is true and that is a big IF...then the problem is with Tyson...deal with them and leave someone doing a good thing alone!
LetMeTellYou says: on May 09, 2009
I didn't see the show but I did print and taste the chicken. The chicken was good enough but not something I would rush out to pay for.
JBallantine says: on May 11, 2009
Honestly, PETA would be happy if every person on this planet ceased to exist so that the animals could run free. However, PETA itself is just as bad as other organizations. They hype things that are untrue and they themselves have put animals down in their shelters. I am all for not abusing animals but honestly - We are omnivores people.. we eat meat AND veggies. This was just a big campaign by KFC and they paid Oprah a lot of money to be their spokesperson for a day. I got the coupons and had the meal. I prefer the fried KFC over the grilled any day.
Joyfulmom4 says: on May 11, 2009
Well, since the deal has been withdrawn anyway (they're not honoring it anymore, but will send out a "rain check" to those who go to the trouble of goign to the store, getting rain check coupons and mailing them in to get a new raincheck coupon) I have a hard time feeling the love in this philantropic gesture.
susanluv says: on May 11, 2009
I think that the whole thing was a scam on the part of KFC. Did they seriously think there wouldn't be a demand for this offer? Now we have to walk into a KFC just to receive a form to mail in (the postage makes it no longer free) to receive our "free" meal. What they want to do is get you in under the pretense that you are receiving a free meal only to find out you're not so because you are already there you buy your lunch, dinner etc and then maybe if you remember to send in for your raincheck you can have a free meal in the next 6 - 8 weeks. What a joke!!
DEXTERBUZZ says: on May 11, 2009
i think the food would have been better to have sent to a food bank or shelter for people who can't afford it - let's face it Oprah got the stuff free from KFC just for mentioning it on her show - how about donating the food KFC/Oprah - poor choice on their part.
mchavezrey says: on May 11, 2009
I'm sure KFC is hoping people don't take the time to go to the store and pick up a raincheck! Anyway, it was a nice thought and I'm sure there are more folks out there with unusable coupons then those who actually received the free meal. Bummer I'm one of those who didn't get in on it but has a coupon! I'm sure hope Oprah is getting a ton of e-mail on this one!! Poor judgement on Oprah's part and this one folks will not soon forget!
JleighDesignz says: on May 11, 2009
:( I was never able to print the coupon and tried several times. Um, if she's trying to feed people who need a meal why not offer a healthier option? I agree, Oprah never gave anyone anything except a bit of PR (for this event anyways)
sjw414 says: on May 12, 2009
I printed my coupon with out a problem, i think she was trying to do a good thing. The follow up show stated that people gave coupons to the homeless, how can you criticize that?
KarenMN says: on May 12, 2009
My only question is: How did the people in need print these coupons? I'm doubting that very many needy people have access to a printer or a computer. Heck! They might not even have access to a TV to view the Oprah show and even find out about this freebie! Don't get me wrong, I think it was nice of Oprah to offer us a free meal but, it would have been nicer to offer it to people that really need the handouts.
wgoddard says: on May 12, 2009
Oprah could have easily lent her support to something that would not have promoted agribusiness and that was far healthier.
cmrharris says: on May 13, 2009
It was a nice gesture from Oprah to post the coupon on her website, but people went overboard with this. I understand that people are out of jobs right now and Anyone (working or not) loves a free meal. But some people went too far and was freaking out because they could not get the coupon printed. I know some poeple took advantage of the program by making copies of the coupon and tried to use them. I think that she should have offered free meals to those in real need. Most of the people that I know that used the coupon had the money to pay for a meal, and I see many homeless people walking the streets that would love a free meal but had no way of getting the coupon. I think it was nice of Oprah but it should have been done differently/
sgc1103 says: on May 13, 2009
Peta get over yourself ... People need and want protein and last time I checked it is a free world if you do not support the Tyson org. Then don't buy their products but leave us alone if we want to
aliona says: on May 14, 2009
Love the gesture. I do wish I was easier to get the coupon! And KFC, they are the ones i am not happy about. In our area they won't honor more than 70 coupons! I was a zoo!!!!Got nothing after an hour of wait!
oravets4 says: on May 14, 2009
I understand how PETA could be upset with this promotion because they are against how Tyson raises their chickens, but honeslty Oprah has nothing to do with it. I think it was great that KFC WAS giving away a free meal for people to try their new grilled chicken. I was able to print out the coupons, but was unable to reddem them due to the high volume of coupons. I sent in for the raincheck, so we'll see if we actually do get it.

CHICKENS ARE FOR EATING AND LAYING EGGS FOR US TO EAT, for heavens sake!!
Butteflylblue says: on May 15, 2009
I had no problem printing the coupon. My problem was trying to find,( which I never did), a KFC that would accept the coupon.
colie2k says: on May 15, 2009
I printed and used the coupon. I respect those who choose to not eat meat but don't agree with them!
Innergy says: on May 16, 2009
Why do we always find ourselves complaining about HOW a good deed is done. You enjoyed the present but didn't like the wrapping paper? I didn't get a chance to print the coupon but I still say "Thank you Oprah, KFC and anyone else involved". I know some people rthat eally needed and appreciated it.
MamaJJ says: on May 16, 2009
This whole coupon deal worked out great for KFC in the long run after all. To get a coupon mailed to you, you have to visit a location, which means...ta da...a likely sale.
ekw1966 says: on May 18, 2009
How do you get the coupons? I like KFC's food.
Mammakin76 says: on May 19, 2009
I don't watch Oprah, so I missed the whole story on this. As others stated, food should have also been donated to shelters for those who don;t have acess to computers. I think that KFC was right in giving away a free meal- I mean I have money to pay for one, but do I spend it eating out- NO.. I can use it else where for my household. I believe Oprah is the most dangerous women in America and people need to wake up and stop "following" her- she is on the band wagon with anything that gets her pockets lined more!
Litesugar says: on May 19, 2009
I think that it was a great idea that was handled poorly by KFC. Like Oprah said, what did they think was going to happen when they announced the offer on her show? I went into KFC to get the mail in rebate and was going to buy lunch since I was there. My goodness, you need a coupon in there. The prices are astronomical!! I left after getting the rebate form and went to more reasonable sister chain, Taco Bell.
teeniemarie says: on May 21, 2009
Go Oprah! I also printed the coupon (did have problems printing it as well) but in this economy who is going to turn down a free meal. Everyone is always so quick to criticize Oprah....
bensmom122 says: on May 21, 2009
Peta doesnt like KFC in general. I doubt it would make a difference where their chicken comes from. Oprah & KFC tried to do a very nice thing, but didnt think through the consequences very well. If this had been done two years ago, they woudnt have had that mess. Thankfully, KFC didnt renig on their offer all together & offered rainchecks which turned out to be an even better offer (they included a free drink). Yes, I did get the raincheck & I did eat there, but I was going to be eating out anyway & frankly, Id rather have KFC than burgers & fries any day. Id rather see a misguided attempt at helping someone, than no attempt at all.
robynlong says: on May 22, 2009
I say great job Oprah! but in my town there were so many people going to our KFC that they stopped doing it. I did print the coupons, but never got to use them. Later on I heard they gave rainchecks but I miss out. I am glad that so many people in my community got the chance to use the coupons! KFC is one of my favorite places to eat!!
jrjackson says: on May 22, 2009
PETA and KFC have a long standing feud....and I think that with PETA giving Oprah the award they did, perhaps Oprah should have considered the backlash she would get from the public after endorsing something like this. It's not like she doesn't have the money to set up free meals at another establishment that treats it's animals humanely....
amanda1010 says: on May 22, 2009
No matter who you are or what you are doing, someone will always have something negative to say about it. Oprah & KFC tried to do a nice thing. If you don't like the way KFC conducts it's raising of chickens, then don't eat there. Leave everyone else alone.
spidermonkey511 says: on May 22, 2009
we appreciated the coupon. Being able to save a little is nice and don't think that PETA should be so upset. Then again anytime someone does something good there is always someone there ready to complain.
jallen9245 says: on May 23, 2009
If you don"t agree with how Oprah hearts desire to help in addition to building schools, and other nice things that is not advertised.then each and everyone that does not agree you go out and feed atleast one person in need .
dbrew101 says: on May 24, 2009
I know somebody who works for KFC . I heard stories of how the employees had to hide in the freezer during the first few days of this promotion , customers were surrounding the building banging on the windows demanding their free chicken. It was a nice idea by Oprah, however I agree the most needy could not print the coupons and the poor planning was a nightmare for employees of KFC.
