Birth Of Octuplets Spurs Debate
Posted February 1, 2009

One young mother and her eight new babies are causing quite a stir in the news recently.  Because of the details surrounding Nadya Suleman’s case, the ethics involved in the birth of her octuplets has become much debated over.  Suleman, who is a 33-year-old single mother of six children from previous in-vitro procedures, currently lives with her parents.

Nadya Suleman's mother, Angela Suleman, has expressed concern over her daughter’s actions and recently told the Associated Press that she was not supportive of her decision to have more children.  Angela Suleman has told the press that her daughter was obsessed with having children and has talked about it since she was a teenager.

The Associated Press reports that all of the 8 babies, 6 boys and 2 girls, were delivered by Cesarean section.  The babies weighed anywhere between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces.  Seven of the eight babies are breathing on their own while one remains on a respirator.  It took 46 doctors and staff to assist in the delivery of these octuplets.

Much of the recent debate has been about whether doctors should have offered the 33-year-old mother of six the option to undergo in-vitro fertilization treatment.  Ethicists also question why the doctors would have implanted so many embryos.  And still others worry about how the mother will raise 14 children, now ranging in age from newborn to 7 years old and whether she will end up relying on public assistance.

A former caregiver to Nadya Suleman’s autistic son, Yolanda Garcia, spoke with the Long Beach Press-Telegram about the mother’s recent delivery.  She said, “From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all.”

What do you think of the news about the recent octuplet birth?

Do you think doctors are at fault for allowing this mother to receive fertility treatment?

The doctors should not have implanted her with so many embryos. Obviously people can have as many babies as they want, but I think this is irresponsible and harms the children and the environment. If you love kids so much adopt 8 kids, but to give birth to 14 kids seems like a lot. How can she care for that many when she is single AND I read she doesn't have a job - she relies on her parents to help pay for everything.

In situations like this (single, six children and living with her parents), the doctors should consider psychological issues regarding the mother. When you adopt children you endure psychological screenings, income evaluations, housing situations etc. It is grueling. Yet any 33 year old, unemployed single mother of six can walk into a fertility clinic and be implanted without any consideration for what type of situation these children are being brought into. I think the Doctors are irresponsible and they should have insisted on counseling and evaluation of the mother before allowing this to happen. She will now relish in all of the freebies the world will throw at her for the first few months. Then where will she be, relying on her parents to babysit or drive her to the welfare office.

I'm having a real problem with this. She already had six children and the doctors knowing that still implanted her. She should have been referred to a mental health doctor. Now who's going to support these children? We are with tax payer dollars and assistance. I'm having enough trouble supporting my own child (only child)!
Armywife76 says: on Feb 02, 2009
I would like to know how she paid to be implanted with these babies when she has 6 children already living with her parents? I am sure just didn't walk in and get it done for free! I think that child welfare should investigate this situation.

After I first heard of the births and people saying that it was ridiculous I was shocked that people would think that other people shouldn't have the right to have kids. But after finding out that she is single? and has 6 kids already is RIDICULOUS! I don't want to say anything about doctors because how many times to the implant that many eggs on other women and women either don't get pregnant or have one or two kids. I just think that something is seriously wrong with the mother. How do you expect to take care of 14 CHILDREN! I have two and I think about that everyday. Its not right that tax payers would have to help.
franceen says: on Feb 02, 2009
They should of never let her do the treatment, considering she already has 6 kids. I thought that proceedure was for woman who had probblems concieving. I also heard that she works at fertility clinic, so whos to say the proceedure was even legal to do. I feel sorry for those little babys. This was a carless decission on this ladys part.. Lets all pray that the babys survive, for they are the victims of this whole mess.
trigg93 says: on Feb 02, 2009
The main issue is, can she care for all of these children? It is one thing is she can provide and care for all of these children, but if not then who is she really thinking about herself and her wants or her children?
hairs2u says: on Feb 02, 2009
I thought it was a wonderful thing. To give this woman a family. Until I heard how many children she already had at home. Who could be so irresponsible to give this woman IVF when she did not need to have it. I know what it is all about to have these issues but When you have that many children already there was no need to put these babies at risk for all the problems that could occur.
fostermomof5 says: on Feb 02, 2009
The birth of children is a blessing from God and happy is the man whose quiver is full of them. However, she didn't rely on God to provide her with children she took matters into her own hands and she will reap the consequence of taking on so heavy a burden and will obviously need the support of family and volunteers around the clock to care for so many. I have five children, three that I birthed and two adopted sons both age two from different mothers and I am a stay at home mom, former professional and I have a hard time keeping my sanity. The joy is immense, but the hard first two years is ahead for this woman and I feel her pain.

My first question is; "who paid for all of the medical procedures so for?..the IVF, all the prenatal care, all the Dr.s and Hospital bills?" I'm sure tax payers!!! I will never understand why that is allow. If you can't/or won't take care of yourself financially why on earth should these Dr.s have helped her bring 8 more children into this world. The only thing I can think of is to get "Their Own Little Moment Of FAME!" SHAME ON EACH AND EVERYONE involved!!! Where are they going to be with the life long care of raissing these children? Unbelievable!!!
lucky1307 says: on Feb 03, 2009
I don't think there is any question that this woman will be on welfare. Her own mother stated they are having trouble supporting the six her daughter already has. I think this woman is 100% selfish for doing this to her other children, her parents and these poor babies that were born under unnatural conditions.
JBaity says: on Feb 03, 2009
These doctors acted in a reckless and selfish manner, with no regard to the possible welfare of these children. They gave her the option of IVF only to make money, and possibly fame for being the doctors to deliver octuplets. How irresponsible of a doctor do you have to be to think it is a good idea to implant 8 embryos into an unmarried woman who already has 6 children & lives with her parents? You would think that somewhere along the line a red flag would have gone up and someone would have insisted that she seek psychological help. If she can raise all these children on her own, with out the help of our tax dollars then more power to her. However, being a single mother of 14, my opinion is that she will seeks the help of taxpayer funded assistance programs, & when she does we should send the bills directly to these doctors, since they are the ones who thought this was a good idea. These doctors should be held responsible for their reckless & irresponsible actions.
pvdela says: on Feb 03, 2009
They shouldn't have offered her the procedure AT ALL, she can't even take care of the first six without depending on her parents for support and she clearly is doing it for a very immature reason, with no thought for how it impacts anyone other than her own selfish, childish desires. She should have been required to pass a psych exam to move forward with any of the procedures including the first one.
tlspencer says: on Feb 03, 2009
I just wonder who paid for all this. It's ridiculous for these doctors just in it for the money, but if she had the money to pay for the procedure at the time, who are they to be the judge and jury? She is definitely a candidate for some MAJOR psychiatric intervention though.
Mom2twoBoys says: on Feb 03, 2009
I agree with you girls!! It is ridiculous! She's going to see her "15mins of fame" disappear quickly. I heard she got a book and a movie deal?!? WTH? They are further endorsing "bad behavior". I do have to say good for her to get a degree (she's working on her masters) so as to make better money to support her kids..... but WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE DONE to have babies!! Ugh! Such irresponsibility all the way around. I fear something will happen to the kids because she won't be able to handle it. I agree with Jen above, too. With the rigorous, intense testing, interviewing, etc that goes into adoption, why didn't she go through the same? THIS CASE IS SO INFURIATING!
minari says: on Feb 03, 2009
she is a product of a media oriented society. boycott her, boycott anyone who endorses her, gives her money. also, my opinion is that if YOU actively use the 'system' to enrich yourself, the 'system' has an active right to make decisions for you. IN other words, she used public assistance in all varieties to get herself pregnant, pay for the care of the children to live in a home too small...taxpayers in the form of CPS have the right to make the parenting decisions for her. I've stopped reading about her because I refuse to waste my time and energy even caring. all of the children belong in foster care and we need to stop paying attention to the WRONG decisions in the WRONG way.
minari says: on Feb 03, 2009
btw I am in no way opposed to large families per se. Like for instance, I am not opposed to the Duggars although I could in no way manage that number of children/fathom it (my father is from a family of 9 children). I am opposed to irresponsible use of any reproductive technology + the sensationalism attached to any incident like this. unfortunately anytime an innovation in reproductive technology comes out -- somehow moral hazard crops up. and the whole public assistance throughout the process INFURIATES ME.
salome says: on Feb 03, 2009
It's her freedom to have as many children as children as she wants and it is also her responsibility to take care of them without extra care from society. Although with all the media hype, most likely she'll end up having a reality show.
not2cute2bevil says: on Feb 03, 2009
Ok wait... if she worked for the fertility clinic, she wasn't always unemployed. It sounds like she was working, probably had insurance that covered the treatments and procedures and income to support the kids she already had. My guess is when she became bedridden with the pregnancy she either lost or quit her job - or maybe is on leave? I think I need a lot more information before I decide who is right and wrong here.
JEM4612 says: on Feb 03, 2009
I agree the doctors never should have agreed to IVF. Does public assistance pay for things like that or did she find a doctor who agreed to payment plan? I agree about the reality show & that she will end up making $ on this. However, that is on us as a society. If no one watched the show or bought the magazines with the story, then the parents stop making $ on the deal.

I agree with everyone on here- great posts!! It is a sad situation.
toni says: on Feb 03, 2009
Very insightful posts, ladies. I have had trouble understanding this situation entirely... Divorced, unemployed and 14 children. It is absurd. I feel like everyone made poor judgement calls. the Mother, the Doctors, the IVF clinic. At what point does a mother of 6, divorced decide to get IVF to try for more? I don't believe the government should limit natural birth, i.e. China. But common sense would seem to dictate the lack of responsibility on both parties.
khunyadi says: on Feb 03, 2009
This story just strikes me as so odd. I mean did the doctors really consider this lady's mental health before implanting more embryos? Did they consider if she can handle the children financialy? This is just a sad story..... for the kids, mom, grandmom.... my heart goes out to all of the kids and new babies....
bonita7878 says: on Feb 03, 2009
Puts me in shock too. She hasn't worked since she first started having kids, her parents bought her a house, her parents went bankrupt and had to move in to the house. Each pregnancy was from IVF?! Even her parents think she was in the wrong and told reporters they wish she hadn't had this many kids (to include the first 6) and needs a job. She (the mother of the 14 kids) has actually come out and expects to make $$$ from a book deal, TV Shows and believes she is what other mothers look up to and that she is the best mom in the world........ I am a single working mother and I bust my a## everyday. No, I am not on any programs either. Unfortunately, I live in California and foresee my tax dollars going hard at work to support her 14 kids.....
lawstudent says: on Feb 03, 2009
I think this is a no brainer, no ethical medical professional should have done this to this woman, her existing children and her unborn babies. She needs mental health care. I do think, as apossitive offshoot, this can open up a real discussion about IVF in America which might be refreshing.
mom2thunder says: on Feb 03, 2009
I tink that having children as a money maker is wrong. The doctors that did this were wrong. I agree with what everyone else has said. What about if there are complications to the childrens health?? They have said that the next 2 years anything can happen. Who is going to financially and emotionally support these children if they problems. Having children is wonderful but when you are now looking to sell your story to the highest bidder that is wrong
kcofield says: on Feb 03, 2009
As I understand she is depending on the media to pay her for pictures and interviews to help her support these children. This means she is selling her kids chance for a private normal life. This is wrong any way I look at it. The grandmother said she is leaving. What a sad story. Its like a form of prostitution for your kids.
sylviaw says: on Feb 03, 2009
I think she is a very brave woman to have so many children.MORE POWER TO HER! About financially, isn't a true family one that helps you when your in need? I Know some people that are useing tax payers money that really shouldn't be getting that money. About takeing care of all the children....Where theres a will theres a way! about the selling pictures... so those contests of babies pictures at your local wal-mart or wherever that must be people selling their kids too. USA is FREEDOM! I know some single mothers that are better mothers than married ones. I think everyone should let her live her own life and keep their noses out of it!
funnygirl28 says: on Feb 03, 2009
She is crazy and she has 6 kids already. now 8 more. the doctors are crazy to what were they thinking? Making a name for them selves? now they are in the news. 46 doctors in on this! Who is paying all these doctors who is paying for the hospital bill? They are no doing this for free ! single mom with 8 more babies to take care of on her own! she is nuts! there are so many babies out there that could have her love why add more to this world! dumba$$!
slbeck41 says: on Feb 03, 2009
I wouldn't want to tell any woman what to do with her body, and this is a very grey area. But...These babies and their mother were at risk during the whole pregnancy. I think fertility treatments should be used for women who really need them. This lady was already blessed with 6 children. Why put your health on the line?
chochie1 says: on Feb 04, 2009
I believe that every woman should have the right to decide how many children to have, but to an extent. How can one woman care for 14 children on her own? And with no father figure at all. It's not fair that tax payers should have to pay for someone's choice to have so many children and not have a job to pay for them. It's a shame that these children will end up suffering. I would also like to know how she paid to have the procedure to begin with. Poor children.
erica_cal says: on Feb 04, 2009
She can have the right to so many kids if she is willing to pay for them. Somehow I doubt she is footing the bill for this!
courtney1191 says: on Feb 04, 2009
I don't believe that having more children was in the best interest of the mother, her existing children, or the newborns. Ultimately, though, this was her choice. I don't believe it's the doctor's job to decided whether or not someone can receive invitrofertilization based upon how many children they already have. They aren't there to judge. I don't know why they implanted so many embryoes, though. Eight is excessive.
Sparkleandshine says: on Feb 04, 2009
Wouldn't you just LOVE to see the hospital bill on this?! 46 DOCTORS. How many nurses and other staff were needed? It just boggles my mind. I do think had she been a married woman and these were her first children people would be reacting much differently. Not that I don't feel the same way as most considering her circumstances. I will not support her 'fame' by buying any magazine that she sells her story and babies pictures off to for the highest price. I would like to know more about the fertility clinic she used. How could the Dr. be so irresponsible. I don't know of any reason so many embryo's would have been transferred to a woman that already has children. This whole story just makes me question her sanity and I wish the best for those babies.
Joianya says: on Feb 04, 2009
You would think that to do a procedure where your patient may possibly have eight children at one time, there would be a psychiatric exam done! She clearly has issues that need to be resolved. I wonder if she is one of these women that "loves" babies but as the child ages, she loses interest, and "needs" another infant? I knew a woman like that, she had 8 children, and the older ones ended up raising the younger ones, once the mother lost interest after they started becoming more independant. So then that creates problems in the older children lives being tied down to their younger siblings, and being responsible for their well being. Two of her older daughters married military men at very young ages, just to get out of that home. The reprocusions are very sad.
DARCISHEA says: on Feb 04, 2009
Why should doctors get to decide whether a woman is worthy of in-vitro? If the ability to implant an embryo exists, then it should be up to that woman if implantation occurs, Right? I would assume quite of few of the people responding negatively are pro-choice, and if you are then you are being hypocrites.
judydodd says: on Feb 04, 2009
I first felt that all the media was really too much and that if she wanted and could support 14 children that wasn't anyone elses business till I heard that she wasn't married, unemployed, and was living with her parents. This probably means that she is on welfare and we are paying for her 14 kids. I don't like that and she should know better than to have this many kids if she couldn't afford them. She loves children from I have heard and this is why she wanted more children. I like to eat but I wouldn't buy a grocery store at the taxpayers expense just to satisfy my wants!
Daintry2 says: on Feb 04, 2009
I feel sorry for the kids, either way they are going to lose out. People are upset about it, so they don't get many sponsors, which will mean less help for raising them. Or on the other end, they get lots of support and are turned into TV puppets. There is no way that a single mom of 6 children should have been allowed to do this. She is only 33 years old, and has NO job. The Dr. should be responsible for supporting them, if indeed a Dr. was part of it. It is a crime in my eyes. All children are a blessing, but she went to far in this. I think it was a premeditated attempt at publicity, that is wrong on so many levels.
thedaurys says: on Feb 04, 2009
Its hard enough being a married mother of THREE let alone being a SINGLE mother of 14. Honestly she had her hands full with what she had. She should of been happy with the six. I HOPE and PRAY things go well. But I dont see how they will. Even Public assistance can only help so much. I wont say Public assistance shouldn't help her but be for real. The doctors should be ashamed of themselves its media coverage even for them. This mutliple birth things have to stop with the invitro Id be more surprised if someone naturally got pregnant with that many then invitro thats done purposely.
violetlady03 says: on Feb 04, 2009
I am so upset Childrens are not toys, they need time and dedication. They should investigate more and take the license of the doctor who implanted all embryos.

This women has hired a Publicist and looks to gain millions in endorsement deals, book deals and appearances. Lets not forget whoever forks over the most $ for the "First Interview". I think the people supporting her in these endeavors are as demented as she obviously is. The eight little babies are days old and already have dollar signs tattooed on their butts.
bettdev says: on Feb 04, 2009
This "woman" is actually an obsessed little girl. She is not married, has no father figure for those kids, lives with, and off of, her mom and dad.....and was allowed to give birth to 14 children????????Where is any sanity in this situation? She has....according to my calculations....been pregnant on a continous basis for pretty much the past 9 years! Why didn't any of the doctors do more than question her reasons? They should have accepted their part of the responsibility in allowing this situation to intensify, and acted to stop it. After all, she COULD'NT get pregnant without their procedures. Makes you wonder if she was used as a "guinea pig" for their in-vitro techniques....?
bettdev says: on Feb 04, 2009
Her own mother has had time to go through counseling because of this......and no one else thought it was time to take a hard look at what was happening? She should be barred from receiving any but the basic assistance needed to keep those kids fed and healthy. She should be required to get a job and prove her ability to take care of them alone.Otherwise, find them homes with RESPONSIBLE people, and for god's sake.... don't allow her to have any MORE KIDS!

aguafria says: on Feb 04, 2009
I think the doctor was very unethical. That's what I question more than anything else. Yes, I think the mom is a little whacko for doing that, but if she wants them, that's her deal and not mine. I did hear on CNN that she wasn't receiving all the "free" stuff that mothers of multiples usually get.
Ripley says: on Feb 04, 2009
I agree. This actually makes me ill. How could the doctor do this when he knew she already had six children and lived with her parents with no financial means of her own to support the six children she already had. Not only the mother but I feel the doctor also should undergo a psychological evaluation. The doctor also should have his medical license taken away for doing this procedure and thus letting this situation happen. What was he thinking?
vonnline says: on Feb 05, 2009
Where are the doctors? Why haven't they come forth and explained their positions about doing such procedures? That would not violate the doctor/patient privilege. They made a purely moral decision. They were not required by law to satisfy her wishes. God bless those children. Their lives are burdened from the first breath - worldwide notoriety, physical and psychological challenges, plus a questionable, solitary parent who is yanked in a minimum of 14 or 15 different directions forever and always.
tigpooh1516 says: on Feb 05, 2009
My main concern is for those children. That is a lot for one person to take care of. I do not understand the Dr.s position, KNOWING that she already had 6 children and KNOWING that there was a chance that the in-vitro could very well take that many embryos. I wonder if this woman even needed assistance getting pregnant or if she just wanted that many children? Can you imagine the hospital bill with 46 different dr.s on it. This just never should have happened. God bless those children.

tpoole says: on Feb 05, 2009
This is definately two fold of my feelings. Firstly, I think it is great that there is a woman out there, who will give the love to these children, as there are a lot of kids out there born as "oops", and they do not have the love from their parents. Now, the real opinion! I think the doctor should lose his license for doing this! She has 6 kids already, living at home and no father figure. 14 kids - omg, how is she going to do it. What bothers me moreso is the fact that she is DEMANDING money and help from other people. What is her true motive in all of this? This is sounding contradicting of what I am trying to say, but I guess overall my opinion is that she should not have gotten pregnant. 6 is enough!!!
