Saving More at the Supermarket
Posted December 13, 2008

There are lots of things we can cut back on when trying to save a few bucks, but when it comes to buying groceries many of us are left gasping at the bill after checking out.  We have to eat right?  With rising costs of food these days and soaring unemployment rates it is really important that we all learn how to be savvy shoppers.

And many of us have already become a lot better at finding deals that will save a small bundle each week.  Shoppers are taking advantage of websites that offer coupons for everything from laptop computers to breakfast cereal.  According to the Indiana News and Tribune, 89 percent of the U.S. population uses coupons.  The traffic on sites like EverSave.com and RetailMeNot.com grows higher as the economy sinks lower.  On average, a family could save close to $10 a month on groceries by using coupons.

Aside from saving with coupons you can find on websites and in newspapers a recent article from CNN also offered some great ways to save at the grocery store.

A great way to get more value for your dollar is to buy in bulk.  Bulk items are almost always much cheaper than individual products.  Things like toilet paper and paper towels should always be purchased in bulk since you know you will use them and they will not spoil.  Stay away from deals on perishables like milk, eggs and produce that will go bad before you can eat them.

Buying the store brand item over a name brand can also help you save quite a bit.  The ingredients and taste are often similar if not identical.  The only noticeable difference is usually the cost

CNN reports about a blind taste test conducted by supermarket expert Phil Lempert.  The test showed that with items like cereal, potato chips, and ginger ale a big percentage of shoppers either could not tell the difference or actually preferred the generic brand.

Making a list may not always be the answer to avoiding impulse shopping.  Robyn Moreno, consumer editor of Women’s Day, told CNN that shoppers with lists spend over 40 percent more than those who shop list-free.  This doesn’t mean you should forget the list all together.  Just think of the shopping list as less of a “wish list” and more as an economically planned list focused around menus for you and your family.

For a complete list of CNN’s tips you can visit: http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/07/09/food.bill/index.html

What do you think of the tips offered above on how to save at the grocery store?

I generally save 10% or more every shopping trip by using coupons. Plus, and this is probably "cheating", but my local grocery store has these No Coupon $10 off Thursdays. If you spend $50 or more you automatically get $10 off (before any coupons- so it adds up!) But the way I cheat is, since I only shop every 2 weeks I usually spend over $100-$150, so I do "trips". I buy my non-perishables first, check out, get the $10 off, load into car then go back for a second trip for the refrigerated and frozen foods so that I get another $10 off. Those Thursdays save me about $40 to $50 a month beesides what I save from coupons.

I don't mean to brag but my family calls me the "Coupon Queen". I use coupons, watch for sales and yes, you do have to read the fine print and comparitive shop to make sure it is a savings. Just last week I was in Sears to get a Christmas gift. I was looking to spend $50 for the gift/gifts for our son. My husband found a wrench set that he wanted on sale for $39.99 and then a cutting tool for $9.99. I thought great! I have a $5 coupon I printed! And a Craftmens Club Card!! Then I asked; "What did you do with those gift cards I gave you that I received for taking tose on-line surveys?" He still had them in his wallet!! It still gets better....there was also a $10 mail-in rebate on the wrench set!!! So, all together $5 off coupon, $10 GC, $5 GC, $3 Craftsmen Club Card Disc., and I'll be getting a $10 rebate in the mail!!! After the rebate; grand total $20.23!!!

I usually like to find a bunch of coupon offers because with the economy now they're EVERYWHERE. In the newspaper on the product's website, etc. It's really great because these companies want to help you, because they want you to buy their products. Although I don't use a lot of coupons I do also like to wait and I a lot of times--wait for it-- buy generic. Some people find generic products to be low-quality but I dont think all generic products are like that. I admit, I do love my Target, and you could never pry me away from there, but sometimes I fess that I do need to cut back on spending, especially since I am a student and I do have other expenses to pay for. So really, a "unique way" to save money on groceries that some people haven't found out yet: BUY WHAT YOU NEED AND NOTHING ELSE.

I use coupons and buy store brands but meat costs are hard to cut. So I started trying a few new recipes that can really stretch your meat budget. Last night I made a box of Uncle Ben's wild rice (the mushroom one) and had my hubby grill a steak (just one). I sliced the steak into thin strips and served over the rice. And the $1 off coupon for the rice made the meal even cheaper. I've also found that if I freeze left overs for the next week, we're more likely to eat them than if I just stick them in the fridge. I also freeze bread (not sandwich type but italian or fenchbread works great). I buy the loaves that are day old and 40% off. When I get home, i slice it and stick in a freezer bag. I pull it out as I need it, wrap in foil, and stick it in the oven. No more moldy bread tossed in the trash.

Check out www.thegrocerygame.com. I've cut my grocery bills in half using this system.

I just started using coupons myself and am truly amazed at how much you can save. The sercret is only buy what you normally buy. Buying something that you don't usually buy just because you have a good coupon is not a savings on your bill. I learned this quite quickly, I think the first time out with a handful of great coupons lol. I love store brands, I've found that in most cases they are exactly the same as name brands. As far as meat goes, since there are only two of us, I'll buy a large family size package and split it up when I get home and freeze, and of course when there is a good sale I'll buy a lot and freeze.

I too use alot of coupons. I'm particularly fond of the deals availalbe at CVS. CVS lets you use a manufacturer coupon and a CVS coupon on the same item. Plus, the extra buck program is a great way to get free stuff.

When I married my husband, he was all about name brand this and name brand that. I shop at Ingle's and always buy the Laura Lynn brand of anything I can. He never knows that he's not eating the name brand of anything and when I told him, he bout hit the floor. Thats why I DO NOT take him to the store with me. If I did, my bill would probably be doubled just from buying name brand. I heard that its all the same stuff, just with a different label and for the most part I believe that!

I use coupons as much as I can. Lately the coupons haven't been for things that I normally buy so I haven't had any to use. I also ask for gift cards to the grocery stores I go to when someone wants to buy me a gift. I do use a list, but I make out my meal list first so that I am only buying what I need to those meals.

I shop at Trader Joes for processed products/breads, frozen vegetables, fish and chicken and organic and Costco (but VERY carefully because just because it's Costco doesn't mean it's cheap) and Walmart . We are basically vegetarian (mostly beans, eggs, and cheese) and have a meat dish once a week (either fish or chicken). If we lived near an Aldis I'd go there as well!

I combine sales with store coupons and manufacturers coupons at CVS for free health and beauty products. I have a stockpile of toilet paper/shampoo/toothpaste/etc. that I payed literally, cents for. At the grocery store I rarely leave without saving at least 60% combining sales with coupons. I use the site afullcup.com for deals at all the grocery stores I shop, plus the site is free. It does take a little work to save so much money. I spend about 3 hours a week organizing and planning my shopping trips. We've gone from spending $400-$600 a month on groceries/health/beauty/etc. to around $200 a month for a family of 4 + cat. That includes fresh produce!

There is a store in my area called Dirt Cheap. It is a salvage type store. I have found some great bargins there. My duahgter recently found a chair there that she had been wanting from Target and the price was $235.00 she paid $35 at Dirt Cheap and that was in perfect condition. I buy can goods on sale in bulk and then buy my meats in large packs and devide it up. I try and buy from local vendors are far as produce. we have several that sit in a vacnt lot in our town and when it it items like sweet potatoes I buy in bulk and store. And I really try to stick to buying only what we use and using a coupon to try something new.

I found coupons to print and a organization where people trade stuff they don't use anymore or maybe it is new and they have never used it. I found these two things on a blog www.realwomenrealmoneyworkfromhome.blogspot.com - they have other money saving ideas too. Definitely worth checking out.

I order coupons every week from http://http://www.save.ca/en/index.htm (these are good quality coupons...at least $1.00 off) for anyone in Canada. The trick to the site is you must order between 2 and 20 coupons....order more or less an the site locks you out for the week! Grrrrr. Another thing I do is get freebies and free samples. Like these for free Tide and Ensure: http://generopolis.com/wpblog/2008/12/21/free-ensure-drink-coupons-tide-total-care/

coupons are the best. I always use them, when I shop in a supermarket. sometimes, I get toothpaste and shampoo for free. it saves a lot of money.

I trade coupons and boy oh boy has it helped me. You can also get coupons on ebay! There are times that these come in so handy when your buying multiplies of one item:)

I plan my meals around what is on sale that week at our favorite "double coupon" store, usually the purchase such as a pot roast will not only be enough for the main meal but for a leftover equally delicious meal that same week. I also email companies and ask if they send out coupons or samples, its amazing how many free product coupons I obtain that way.

I try to save in a lot of areas. But, food shopping is the worst. No matter how hard I try it is one of my highest bills. The gas prices went down and the food hasn't. What will happen when the gas goes up again. No one will afford to eat. This is crazy. Something needs to be done. There is only 3 of us in my house What do people do that have 5 or more???

I buy the best deal possible. Meaning, if the store brand is a better deal than a name brand with a coupon and sale, I buy the store brand. I use Couponmom.com for weekly deals at my grocery store. I have also learned to buy health and beauty items at discount drug stores and stock up on items that are on sale. I was able to get $100 worth of health and beauty items for $38. That was my biggest savings yet!

I can't believe how high food prices have gotten but I'm lucky to have 2 large grocery stores within 2 blocks of each other. When the flyers come out, I sit down and make my lists based on what's on special that week and whatever coupons I have. There's a great website, Allrecipes.com, that has an recipe finder based on ingredients. There are thousands of recipes online with most of them contributed by readers. I plug in the specials and have been able to make some really great meals for my family fairly inexpensively and they get to try something new. They also have a category for budget meals. Definitely worth checking out!

My Tips for Saving at the Grocery and other Dept Stores is as follows: Sign up to receive email newsletters from your local Grocery Store IF they have a website. One of my local stores is Raleys, and if you sign up on their website at www.raleys.com , each week they email a different set of instore coupons for either money off your entire purchase or discounts on specific items , unadvertised specials, and even some freebies once in a while. Check out these websites for coupons, special deals and mail in rebates on items you may have already purchased which would make the item FREE after the rebate: www.dealsofamerica.com www.mysavings.com www.tasteforlife.com Good luck in your savings adventure!

I have always used coupons, from the time I was in my teens (I'm now in my 40's). This past year I kept a close count on just how much money I saved using coupons. Get this ... in 2008, I save $6879.55 using coupons!!!!! I knew that I saved a good bit, but I never realized just how much until I added it all up. I now have over $6000.00 worth of FREE items just by using coupons and being a savvy shopper. I only use the coupons that I get from my local newspaper or mail advertisements. If I could find a website (that is FREE) where I could print coupons, no telling how much I could save in 2009. It takes a little time and effort, but to me the money saved is worth all the work!
KsFoodie says: on Jan 15, 2009
The overall theme here is "Use coupons'. They will often make the name brand item cheaper than a generic store brand, especially if your store offers double coupons. Also, don't overlook the mark-downs! I recently found a 6-pack of Slim Fast marked $1.50. Had a dollar off coupon. One caveat-always check the expiration dates, but remember, food doesn't 'die' on the date that's marked. Shop for foods in season, cook from scratch (it's healthier) and save money!.

I have found another way to saving at teh grocery store aside from coupons is to cook breakfast. Just cooking a good hot breakfast on the weekends only has saved us. With everyone being home on the weekends I was noticing "snacking" going on that doesn't typically go on during the week. We started feeding the kids a cooked breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays rather than cereal, it sustains everyone longer and even cuts back on how much they tend to eat at lunch. Also, I try to prepare their snacks for them, rather then the once, "free for all", this forces them to sit down and eat it, and the amount is controled and now I regulate a more healthy snack. I have stopped buying "junk" food, and since I regulate their snacking now they don't even notice that we don't have "ding-dongs" anymore. It took some time, but now I am noticing that even during the week when they are wanting a snack they tend to reach for hard boiled eggs, or cheese cubes, even fruit over the more sugary items.

I always use coupons and watch for sales on Meat and stock up usually on the 1st or 2nd day of the sale..and then on the last day of the sale I do another check, but most of items are gone, so I ask for rain checks. I have been able to use rain checks months after they expire by telling the manager or cashier the items have not been in stock when I came in to purchase (especially meat in grocery stores), and I have not had any problem using an expired rain check..so hold on to them even after expiration dates!! If you watch the meat sales they rotate between pork, chicken and beef from week to week..great sales seem to happen every 4-6 weeks. I don't have a large freezer like I used to when I had kids, but my fridge freezer holds enough for me to do a good job of rotation between my meats and frozen foods I find on sale. Also, check out websites like Slickdeals.net , cliipngocoupons.com, couponbug.com, hotcouponworld for pointers on savings and coupons.

I love my coupons. My hubby thinks I am crazy by how addicted I am to saving money. I use coupons for just about everything. I can not tell you the last time I had to pay anything for toiletries(razors, shampoo, soap, ect. ) With coupons and sales I can usually get it for free then I stock up. I wish we had a CVS and Kroger close by because I have seen some people get unbelievable deals at those stores using coupons.

I save tons of money using coupons on everything from HBA items to food. We shop whats onsale, match our coupons with the store adds, and sometimes walk out of the store with name brand merchandise that we only had to pay taxes on. My friend is a couponing queen, only paying taxes on everything, and sometimes recieving money back from stores.. the night before last, we got 6 packs of tp, 9 packs of maxi pads, 9 bars of childrens soap, 10 boxes of pizza rolls, 4 bags of veggies, 3 bags of rice cakes, 5 cases of soda, and 2 bags of chips, all name brand items for 26.00 total, tax and all.. plus I got a 10 dollar print out for savings on my next visit to that store. Can not beat those deals.

I use coupons sometimes, but my store here has great sales that you dont need coupons for. They always have 10 for 10.00 sales here and its usually on great things like cans of spaghetti sauce and packages of pasta, soup and things like that. So I try to buy as much of that as I can. I always take a list. I plan out what I am going to have for dinner for that week and buy only the things I need for that, plus breakfast stuff and non food things like toilet paper if I need it or dishwasher soap. I never buy anthing thats not on my list and I never go to the store when I am starving. We dont have much to pick from here is our small town, we have a Wal mart supercenter and an Albertsons, so between the two I can usually do pretty good for the week.

Coupons are the way to go. It is like finding free money. I typically save $50 a week. I make sure to buy things when they are on sales, when I have a coupon and when store is offering double coupon. What beats a free product, how about the store pays me to take products home!

Couponing has saved me a lot of money. Also, stockpiling saves money. I take advantage of sales and buy a lot of items when they are at a low price. By doing this, I haven't had to buy laundry detergent for over 6 months. It really helps to save money and we need to since we have four little ones.

Coupons do help alot but I go to Sams and buy the big bag of chicken breasts and separate them into small family meals for the three of us in my family. i freeze those. I also buy the bulk ground turkey and separate that also into small meals. There are alot of ways to cook chicken and turkey. Sales help alot when using coupons at the grocery store. You just have to be creative and it is time consuming.

I buy in bulk and have a chest freezer in the storage closet on my apartment patio. The storage allows me to freeze items for later. I go to the bread store and when I buy so many items I get free bread items from the shelf. I try to use coupons but it is hard to have tem with me when I am out and need to stop for something. There is also ways to make your own laundry soap and such. It all takes alittle effort but can add up!

I always use coupons and save ALOT of $$$$. It does take time and patience, but is well worth it. I had one cashier get "crappy" and tell me I was using too many coupons!! I asked her how much money saved is too much?! She didn't have a reply to that. I'm not as good at it as others who receive money back from the store, but I usually end up saving at least 40% off my bill. I also go to the company websites, like Bettycrocker.com, Pillsbury.com, etc. and they have coupons too. I also get samples and freebies from mysavings.com. When you receive a sample, theres usually a very good coupon enclosed.

There aren't as many good coupons today as there were years ago, yet I still use coupons , and I buy items on sale each week that I need and have coupons for. I save over $200 each month and that is over $2400 each year. I make sure we are stocked up for weeks and I buy food for holidays months in advance. Things will be getting much worse if the farms keep vanishing. The price of food is going to get ridiculous. I recently saw a story about many people are growing some of their own fruits and vegetables in their gardens and others in cities like NY have hens in their little yards. They are saving on eggs. We are going to see much more of this in the future it is almost as if mankind is slowly converting back to some old ways of providing for their families.
