We have all heard the dos and don’ts from media outlets telling us what we should and shouldn’t be doing during the economic downturn.  One Seattle author is offering something a little different.  About a year ago Jill Keto, ex-Boeing engineer and business owner, sat down to pen a recession guide specifically for women called Don’t Get Caught with Your Skirt Down: A Practical Girl’s Recession Guide.

Since the economic crisis has come on fast these last few months Jill Keto knew she had to get her book published right away.  She also wanted to find an economic way to publish the guide that would go along with her theme of teaching women how to live economically.  She decided to self-publish her book through Amazon for a mere $40.  Since then her book has become very popular on the website and prompted Simon and Schuster to offer Keto a traditional book deal.

Keto explained to her local news affiliate the reason she chose to write on this subject was because women are losing their jobs at a faster rate and have riskier mortgages compared to men.  Keto offers a variety of tips in her new book like how women can keep their jobs, create backup income, cut grocery bills in half, and look gorgeous without spending a fortune.

The author also expands on four essential skills that can help women succeed during a recession.  The skills she discusses are:

?    Learn a new language to expand business and job opportunities. (Keto learned Mandarin)
?    Be able to fix things in order to save and make money.
?    Learn to negotiate.
?    Cultivate a strong mind.  Your attitude is the only thing you truly control.

What do you think of a recession guide targeted to women?

Does Jill Keto’s book sound like something you would read or give someone as a gift this year?

I would like to read this book, for sure. Going through Amazon got the attention of a publisher. I would never have thought about doing that. I thought I was frugal, I've cut corners but am still having a hard time lately. Any pointers or tips no matter the subject are always helpful.

To cut grocery bills, check out www.thegrocerygame.com. It costs a dollar a week to become a member, but it has allowed me to cut my grocery bills in half!

I cannot agree more with learning to fix things to save money. I strongly recommend buying a house repair book you can save so much money on the small things. My mom always wants to call an expert, but I prefer to read up on the problem first. And save operating manuals, I recently used one to fix a non working burner on my stove.

It sounds great! I haven't checked it out to see how much it costs yet.

I would love to read a book like that. I'm starting school in January (at 26!) for graphic and web design. I was hoping to start a career that I would be able to eventually have my own business from home with, so that I would be able to stay home with my children. But with the state of things, I'm not sure how this plan will work out! I think any advice would be helpful.

I don't think the book would really be aimed towards a woman like me, I am a stay at home-schooling mom and have not worked in more than 12 years. But I would be interested in a book that can teach me more things I need to know to have cost savings around our home and in our lives. This economy is really effecting us very hard in Michigan, and I think there has to be more a woman like I can do to help bring money in to our home or to at least cut expenses.

Truthfully I do not think that I would be interested in reading this book. I am a 63 year old disabled senior citizen and would love to hear tips and hints to save money and make our meager checks go furthur though.....
