The Gift Card: Get It Or Forget It?
Posted November 28, 2008

Many of you may have received an email recently warning about the dangers of purchasing gift cards this holiday season.  The email includes a long list of popular stores that are said to be filing for bankruptcy soon.  According to reputable news sources, the email making its way from inbox to inbox contains a lot of false information.

While some stores included on the list have already closed like Bombay and Linens ‘N Things, a lot of the other stores on the list are still in good shape and are not showing signs of financial struggle.

The email claims The Home Depot is closing stores due to hardships.  After ABC’s Boston affiliate contacted the store’s officials directly, they report that The Home Depot has “no plans to close additional stores” and will actually be opening a new location before Christmas.

Ann Taylor was also a store on the list of possible bankruptcies, citing that they would be closing down 117 stores.  Officials from Ann Taylor issued a statement calling the email “false and misleading”.  Though the company closed 117 stores a year ago due to underperformance, it continues to thrive almost 1,000 other locations.

The validity of the email has been disproved, but the message may still hold some importance. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune if you receive a gift card this year you should try to redeem it as soon as possible.  David Brennan of the Institute for Retail Excellence reported to the Star Tribune about mall leases.  He said that since most of the store leases begin February 1st or August 1st you probably have all of January to redeem those cards without taking a risk.  Though he warns of the possibility that December 31st could be the last day some restaurants and small businesses will be open.

Having said that, it is always a safer bet to give cash rather than gift cards.  There is always a chance the cardholder could lose it or even forget about it.  And with more stores feeling the pain from the economic downturn, there is the possibility that the store could go under and you would be left with nothing more than a worthless plastic card.

What do you think of the recent news coming out about the safety of purchasing gift cards?

Will you still be purchasing gift cards this holiday season?

It's hard to believe anything you hear these days without reseaching it first. Who makes these things up? And where do they find the time? Anyway, yes I will and have already purchased some GC's this holiday season, I am just being careful about where I am doing so.

I prefer giving and getting universal gift cards (like MasterCard) because there are fewer restrictions as to where it can be spent. If I know someone specifically wants something at Best Buy, for example, I might get them a Best Buy card instead, but I also know that plans can change and would rather offer the recipient some flexibility.

A universal gift card sounds like a great alternative. It gives the reciever so much more flexibility in where to spend it.

I do send gift cards to family but usually to Amazon and I know my son will use it right away. It does make you wonder where these e-mails originate from.

I have never been big on gift cards, there are just too many restrictions, fees, etc. Gifts or cash tends to be the safest!

I am still getting my husband a gift card for Dicks Sporting Goods because I know as soon as he gets it on Christmas, he will be out that week using it!! That will probably be the only gift card that I purchase this holiday.

I will still get some gift cards!
patrossi2004 says: on Nov 30, 2008
I always give out GC's Tweens and older really like them. That being said it has always been a priority to find the ones they would like for a store I know I can depend on !! That's why I go with the larger chains mostly.....I know that they can always find something at Target or Walmart !!
jemappel says: on Nov 30, 2008
I like gift cards to general places like Target - who can't find something they want at Target? I hate the MasterCard, Visa and AmEx gift cards because you have to pay $4.95 or so for the card itself - what a waste, I want to give money to the person I give the gift to, not the credit card company! Also, with those cards, they lose $2 in value every month you don't use them. There are more restrictions and penalties on the "universal" gift cards.

I will absolutely be purchasing and using gift cards.
tknerrer says: on Dec 02, 2008
I think gift cards are a wonderful gift for those hard to buy for people. I will continue to purchase them but only from companies with a large selection and that I trust to stay in business e.g. Target, Amazon.com. We are in a recession and anything could happen. I think we just need to be careful of who we are doing business with. I recently had to drive 60 miles to cash in Linens and Things gift cards because they wouldn't allow me to use them for online purchases.

I've always bought gift cards and never had a problem.

You can also buy gift cards from your local mall. They can be used in any store in that particular mall.

I'm going to buy my teenage nieces giftcards since they're a little harder to shop for. I've never had any trouble w/ them, personally . I love receiving them since then I'm definitely able to ge exactly what I want or need.

I always buy gift cards and never have a problem --there was a list that was floating around about the stores that are going under--ON good morning america they said it was false... I for one love gift cards
ladylisette says: on Dec 03, 2008
You can always give gift cards to a mall or shopping center. Those can be redeemed at any store or restaurant in the group. American Express gift cards are flexible as well.
earthlinganimal says: on Dec 03, 2008
I always prefer to give and receive cash than gift cards. Even with Visa / AmEx cards, there are fees if they're not used promptly. Cash = use anywhere, no restrictions.
sazm42 says: on Dec 03, 2008
don't like gift cards unless i know for sure that it's a place frequented by the receiver. I dislike receiving giftcards to places i do not frequent.
Sanjabay says: on Dec 03, 2008
I actually tell my family and friends not to get me gift cards because I just don't like them. They feel impersonal, I would rather a gift that requires some thought. However, I know that I am in the minority, my cousin, like many, prefers gift cards. About the warnings about gift cards, I think that a little common sense is required, obviously don't buy circuit city gcs.

I absolutely love gift cards... I feel like it gives me choices

I enjoy getting and giving gift cards it makes it a lot easier on the person that is hard to get for or that lives far away.
tigpooh1516 says: on Dec 03, 2008
Yes, we will definately be buying GCs this Christmas. I think just in case, we will be buying them from some of the bigger stores, just to be sure of not having that problem. You really do have to be careful what you read/ believe though!
hpersellin says: on Dec 03, 2008
I do like gift cards, both giving and getting. I am going to be a little more choosy this year. The companies that I think are going strong I won't mind holding on to or buying giftcards from, but the companies that are shaky I am not going to buy from and if I get cards from them I am going to spend ASAP!
nyflirt225 says: on Dec 04, 2008
I hate buying or getting gift cards, unless they're personalized in some way. Like for me, I love spa treatments so a card for that would be nice. For my brother- in- law we got him a gift card to a local sports shop. But going to the grocery store at the last minute to get one shows a lack of connection... and with the economy so bad, I think that it is cheaper to buy a few small gifts than give a gift card, if you bargain shop like me!
Tandt625 says: on Dec 04, 2008
I give gift cards to certain family members every year. I haven't bought ONE this year. I'm worried about these problems happening.
a2burns says: on Dec 05, 2008
buy the american express , mastercard or visa one. they do not go out of business and can be used anywhere with no monthly fee eating away at the principal !!!!!!!!!!!!
threadbeaur says: on Dec 05, 2008
I think gift cards are great. We like to purchase them for our out of town people. Keeps the shipping low! I am sure if you buy for a MAJOR store you will have time to use the gift cards, but if you are worried, the cards issued from major credit cards could be your best bet!
pennsgal says: on Dec 05, 2008
I love giving ang getting gift cards - especially for those we gift that are hard to buy for. I think if you are going to give a gift card this season - do your homework and find out which stores will be closing - even if you have a gift card for that particular store, and it closes, perhaps it's possible to use the card at the stores online website? Thanks for the above article commenting on Home Depot, I had heard the rumor that it was closing, but couldn't find confirmation.
cveldman says: on Dec 05, 2008
I'm concerned about buying gift cards this year because we've had a couple stores in my area that pushed gift cards as an option, then merged with another company that didn't honor the cards. That's a nice way to get a windfall for a company, but it makes a lousy gift. I'm just going to be more cautious. Thanks for the update regarding these companies. So far the only one I've gotten is for a beauty salon where I know the owner well and I know she's doing well with no plans to close.
happybookworm says: on Dec 06, 2008
I have gotten burned in the past w/gift cards and gift certificates from stores that close. I do give grocery gift cards to the service people in our lives, bus drive, preschool assistants, etc. because who can't use groceries?
Sweethrt7873 says: on Dec 07, 2008
I will still get some and give some. But i will do research first. I think univeral gift cards are a good idea.
kirstensapphire says: on Dec 07, 2008

I love getting and giving gift cards and will use the grocery idea this year for presents. That is a really good idea!
mustangmomma says: on Dec 08, 2008
I will give some gift cards again this year. But I will suggest that they be used rather quickly. Honestly, I knew the sales of gift cards were down this year, but didn't realize there was a big issue with them. Thanks for the update!
ace2ace says: on Dec 08, 2008
I usually give cards to a store like Target or Walmart because they carry such a wide variety of things. I know the card recipient can always find something to get there. While I like the idea of a universal card(Visa, etc.), I do NOT like the fact that I have to pay a fee just to purchase it.
ajie128 says: on Dec 09, 2008
Gift cards are hard sometimes as they hold a balance after you use them for emaple I have one for $50 when I buy something that cost $49.82 I have this balance on a card of $0.18... Where am I going to spend that??? Cash is better to a certain extent but then it seems like you forgot the person and just dug in your pocket to give them a gift. so it is a catch 22
lvn777 says: on Dec 09, 2008
u can NEVER go wrong with giving or receiving a gift card on joyous occasions. I prefer to give a mastercard or visa giftcared because u can't go wrong and likely never going to lose your money. If you buy from a department store than you'll never know if the next day they will file for bankruptcy (GOD FORBID), some of us just like to take that chance though.
szyhmkr says: on Dec 09, 2008
I am going to purchase gift cards for my niece and nephew this year. They are hard to buy for because I don't see them very often and really can't relate with their styles. I gave them a Visa card last year thinking they could use it at any store or just to get a drink at McDonalds. My sister said it was a pain in the butt to use because you had to know the amount you had on it to use it. So, I am going to go for a general mall gift card for my niece. That way she can buy from any of the stores in the mall. My nephew will be happy with Wal-Mart.
grovej1 says: on Dec 10, 2008
I giving gift cards as opposed to giving money. I had not considered that a company may go out of business before the gift card is used. I will continue to purchase gift cards and hope that the receiver uses them right away.
magsgarden says: on Dec 10, 2008
I love getting these.. :) and always redeem them as soon as I can .. they will burn a hole in my purse, spend me .. spend me!!.. LOL
petreebird says: on Dec 11, 2008
Gift cards are great! Of course I am impossible to shop for, so it's better for everyone that I do it myself. Getting a visa/mc gift card for me would be ideal because many places that I shop at do not offer cards, or my out-of-town friends/relatives cannot purchase them, if they are a small specialty store.
cefurman says: on Dec 11, 2008
I will be purchasing them. There is nothing I hate worse then spending money on a gift that someone doesn't really like. Thanks for the truth about that email--I was wondering about it.

I will buy macy gift card , since i dont know what present I should buy for the guests.

I love buying gift cards. Sometimes it is easier then trying to figure out what someone wants for their birthday or christmas etc. Everyone wins.
misseltoe says: on Dec 13, 2008
I buy a lot of gift cards. I appreciate getting them, but I am not worried about the stores I purchase from. I don't like the mastercard giftcard because you can't go over the limit on the card which I find frustrating. I've gotten a couple and had a couple of dollars go to waste because of that restriction. Gift cards don't expire in California so I don't worry about time restrictions. I have a couple of movie gift cards I received two years ago that I still haven't used but will be able to because they don't expire.
pynoblem says: on Dec 19, 2008
I bought multiple gift cards for Waldenbooks and Wal-mart. I am not worried about these stores closing, and the recipients love the stores.
