Walking To School Is In
Posted August 4, 2008

Walking to School Is In BlogSchools across the country are finding clever ways to do their part in promoting good health and reducing pollution. A recent article in USA Today describes how some schools are encouraging children to walk or ride bikes to school rather than getting a ride from parents.

For some students, however, walking is not an option since they live too far from their schools. These children are encouraged to form car pools and walk for at least part of the way. Schools are beginning to realize that students can receive great health benefits from walking or biking as well as reduce traffic around schools and auto emissions.

One 8-year-old student enjoys the incentives her Boulder, Colorado school offers. Megan says, "You get treats too ? usually some kind of food.? And she adds, "Since I like animals, I want to save the environment.? The prizes being offered go beyond treats too. Some schools offer digital cameras, bike bells, and bottles of water. The national Safe Routes to School program (administered by the Federal Highway Administration) has funded 40 states to promote walking and biking to school.

Though many parents were apprehensive about the safety of their children walking to school, it was not long until they began recognizing all of the benefits. Katy Jones, manager of the Safe Routes to School program in North Carolina, says children have a greater chance of being struck by lightning than getting hit by a car.

Walking provides exercise and the opportunity to socialize before school. Walking can also reduce a child's risk of developing obesity or diabetes later in life. It is also believed that exercise in the morning can make a child more responsive in class.

What do you think of school's offering incentives to students who walk or ride bikes to school?

Would you allow your child to walk or ride a bike to school where you live?

Both of my girls have walked from day one. We live 3 blocks from their elementary school. I do know some parents that would pick up and take their kids to school even though they live as close as we do. Since I work my girls never had the option of not walking. Our school district will not pick up anyone living 2 miles or less from their home school at the elementary level and 3 miles or less from the high school. I don't know that I agree with the incentives, it seems like we have to reward people anymore to get them to do the right thing. The high school that I teach at has a parking problem in the student lot. We often have 3 different cars from one family at the school as everyone thinks that they have to drive to school and can't carpool or ride with a family member. I have even seen students who park farther away then they live, just to be able to say that they drove to school.

I volunteer with our elementary school's PTA and I an in charge of the annual Walk Your Child To School Day to promote walking. I didn't want it to be a once a year activity so I came up with Walking Wednesdays (walk to school every Wed.) and Fitness Fridays (walk or ride your bike to school). I randomly give out incentives such as chilled flavored water, granola bars, tattoos. reusable Walking is Cool bottles, activity booklets, lollipops. On Walk Your Child To School Day I invited Planet Smoothie to come and serve free samples, plus gave away granola bars and safety items. Sure my kids can walk or bike ride the mile to school, but I go with them. That means I get get 4 miles of biking or walking!

I think this is a great idea! There are so many parents dropping off kids in our elementary school that every year they have to reinforce safety rules and basic courtesy rules so that no child gets hit by a car. Some of these kids live blocks from the school. Unfortunately my sitter lives too far away from the school for my 10yr to walk there, but he has asked in the past. I like the idea not only for the exercise, but because it gives the child some responsibility. As a mother of 3 (2 teenages & 1 pre-teen), I am concerned about raising a child who will be ready to face the world at 18.

I think this is a great idea as well. I am a critical care nurse and see the results of obesity and diabetes and cannot believe today's statistics on the rise in childhood obesity and diabetes, and heart disease. Yes today children are being diagnosed with heart disease and high cholesterol. As parents we need to give them the opportunity to succeed in life and one of the easiest ways is to keep them healthy. If we take the time to show them that walking to school can be fun, or that it has a benefit think what else we are helping them with....long life!

GREAT idea! With so many overweight and obese children now what a marvelous idea. What a gret way to conserve and use less gas. I wish my children and I lived close enough to walk to their school we live 10 miles away. I love the fact that the schools are encouraging this with prizes, but it could just be done to try and get children to make healthier choices. We don't always have to be motivated with prizes, intrinsic motivation is good, too.

I love the incentives and fun ways listed here to encourage kids to walk to school. Not only environmentally friendly, but gives them the much needed exercise and thus parents too get in shape.

I wish that would start similar programs for adults as well. If people had incentives, that would encourage people not drive so much.

While my children are too young (3 yrs, and 9 months), given the proper training for handling strangers, and the right neighborhood, I would let them walk once they are old enough. I think for the first school year I'd walk with them, I could use the exercise! I do think that with issues such as childhood obesity, pollution, and other problems being such a big factor in our society today, I feel this is a wonderful program and I wish we could get the other 10 states involved!

Walking or biking to school is what all kids should do, if they are able. When I was growing up we walked to school everyday. Offering incentives to the kids though I'm torn about. In a way it's good if it's encouraging kids to walk. But on the other hand kids should do it without having to be rewarded.

I love the idea, but living 13 miles from the school is not an option for my kids to walk....But they also do not drive in, they ride the bus....I think that our school needs to keep physical education in the system for all grades...Alot of the juniors and seniors are very overweight...

I think walking to school is a great way to promote physical activity for our children. However, I don't think I would allow my child too walk to school because of the area where I live. The main road has a lot of trees by the sidewalk and it is a busy street. I would worry too much about safety and strangers.

I think this is a great idea to get children out and getting some healthy exercise. Kids have so many things these days to do other than get out and be fit and this is a great way to encourage that. I live in a more rural area and walking to school would be safe and easy so I would encourage kids to take advantage of this.

I think it is great to encourage children to walk and be healthy!! I wish it was that easy though. We live 1.8 miles from my childrens elementary school and do not qualify for the bus because we have to be at least two miles away. My children are very healthy and we do exercise (we live next to a park with a playground, soccer field, and baseball diamonds.) With a 2, 4, and 6 year old it is just not feasible for them to walk especially since their are not sidewalks the whole way there. Walking part way is not a bad idea though and I think if our school did have certain days that they encouraged everyone to walk we would definitely take part, especially if there were other parents for me to walk back with!!

When I was a kid we walked to school. Our local school is only 2 miles away. I would love for the kids to walk but there are no sidewalks!

This is a great program! I walked to school from 5th-12th grade it was only a few blocks, but every little bit of exercise counts. I'm a little confused on why the school is offering treats as an incentive to an exercise program? I guess it depends on whether the treats are healthful. If we lived closer to the school I would definitely encourage my child to walk but we are about 6 miles away.

Wouldn't it be great if every town and neighborhood had sidewalks and safe walking areas for Everyone to Walk? I would love to take my 3 year old on a walk to the store that is literally a 15 minute walk away, but our street has no sidewalk and neither does the street around the corner. We have to Drive to a park in order for me to take a safe walk with him. It's a shame that our culture is so dependent on cars and that our local, state and federal governments do little in the way of a walking infrastructure for it's citizens.

Everyone, adults and children alike, needs to be more health and environmentally aware. As adults we need to set good examples for our children; that includes walking to work, the post office, etc. I think our children will follow suit if we don't cart them around in the car everyplace they need to go. My husband walks 2 miles to work most days!

That's great news. I used to ride my bike to school, when I was a child....about 2 miles, but I would not let my son do it, as we are in a very urban area. We are about 1.5 miles from the school, and his father will drop him up at 8 a.m., and he will either walk or ride his bike home with his younger brother and me.

I am a mother of three children ages 16 14 and 11. I am an advocate on children and health, however, my two daughters (16 & 14) do walk to school on good days as long as their is more than the two of them walking. Because one of my daughtes is an extreme asthmatic, she does frequently have the need for a ride. My son, however, is still too young to walk on his own. I feel it is a great incentive for children to walk/bike to school as long as it is safe for them to do so....In todays society it is not always safe for children to be walking at a young age. This leads to too many situations where their lives are at risk or the potential desire to skip or leave school without the parent's knowledge or to get into fights, etc.

My daughter walks to school also. Easy enough since we live across a street from the high school. It is safe because she uses a bridge to cross. She is a senior this year and asked if she could drive her car there, I scoffed at the idea. There is no reason to pay a parking permit when it will only take her 5 minutes to walk. If she needs the car, she can come home for it.

In my state, some cities have raised the distance to 2 miles. Meaning if you live more than 2 miles from the school, you are not eligible to ride the bus and must find your own way to school. In my opinion, that's a little far for elementary school aged children to be walking. Especially when it's due to gas prices and not for the children's health.

Do any of you worry about your kids walking to school alone? We live 9 miles from school but I am just afraid to let mine go anyway. I would walk with her if we lived closer.

I wholeheartedly endorse walking to school where it is feasible. Too few students who live close to our elementary schools walk. Given the right neighborhoos setting they should walk. However, the entire community should be enlightened about their walking & classes offered for the students and the community on how to watch out/protect the children. However, some areas are not conducive to walking. I live on a rural road with no sidewalks & the cars that go by travel much too rapidly. Also my daughter would have to walk alone. These are not good circumstances for any child to walk.

I am considering it, but my almost 9 year old has ADHD and I am concerned he will easily get distracted. I may pick up a pair of motorola walkie-talkies that way I can have contact with him the entire way there and back :)

It is a great idea, but school is too far away and there aren't sidewalks for most of it. We all go for walks after dinner instead.

We walk unless its raining. We are only 3 minutes from the school. IF I have to drive to pick him up I try to do other errands at the same time. I am notorious for scheduling Dr appts, hair appts, dentist appts etc right after school is over just to save time and money

I don't have kids so I don't understand why my neighbors kids gets off the bus its only 1/2 block from home but their grandmother is waiting at the bus stop to pick them up! Why is that? Is it so UNSAFE these days that 2 kids can't even walk 1/2 block? They are never outside more than 45 minutes! She claims its to hot. Well, they are kids! Someone help me understand this!

Walking to school is not an option for my daughter, although I wish it were. Physical education should be a daily class not once or twice a week.

I would love my daughter to be able to walk to school. The neighborhood I live in has too many dogs, a lot of them pitbulls for me to feel safe enough to let her do that. Our mailman has been attacked twice! There are always dogs running loose! I used to walk myself in the neighborhood now I drive to a park close by and walk. Its sad.

I drive my children to school --there are too many weirdos in the world today -I'd rather go off to work knowing I saw them walk in the front door of school instead of wondering all day if someone talked to them or there sneakers are wet from the rain or snow! It gives me peace of mind!

I think walking to school is great for kids that are old enough to do it! For some kids this maybe the only exercise they get besides gym class. We live out in the country and this doesn't apply to us. I also think that this would be better for the school district, as their gas dollars would be saved somewhat.

When I was in elementry school a long time ago, I walked to & from school. It was only a few blocks away. It made me feel independent and mature. I felt responsible and felt that I also earned a level of trust from my parents. When I have children old enough to walk to school (as long as school is within a reasonable amount of distance), then I would want them to walk to school too. And if my kids aren't old enough quite yet, then I would walk with them everyday until they are. Great way to get excercise and start off the day right. And a major bonus to putting less pollution in our air.

My kids walk to and from school. We live about 3 blocks away. I was surprised when the kids came home from school their first day last year and said they are 2 of only 12 kids that walk to school. Huh? We have a very large school and it is located in the middle of residential area. This is a great form of excercise, saves gas, and saves all the congestion at the parking lot.

I live too far away for my girls to walk to school. If we lived closer, we would walk everyday. As it is.. my girls are outside all the time. They love to play outside and choose that over the tv.

Yes, I agree with everyone. We live maybe 2 blocks from our elementary school. So far I can walk with them. It helps me to have time to listen to my kids share anything. I know in the after school program they have the kids walk 1 mile together. When they get 5 miles the receive a small plastic shoe they put on a necklace. My kids like to play outside too.
